View Full Version : What does "(AC)" mean?

Looking on websites about B5 Passats, there seems to be a version of each model that's listed with (AC) after them. What's the difference? The 'AC' ones are lighter, give better MPG, and are apparently a little quicker. Surely it can't mean 'Air Conditioning', can it?

I don't think AC would make it quicker and lighter, is is a weird way of saying saloon or estate?

I don't think so. Have a look at this, a page specifically for saloons:

AC means Air Conditioning, the reason for the difference in mph,is,they are being compared to a vehicle with an auto gearbox

I don't think it's that. Look at the link above - it differentiates between auto and manual as well as AC or not.

it will be Air Conditioning, no other explanation for it, if you listen instead of just disagreeing with some of the most in the know vag experts then you may just learn something.

manual saloon
manual saloon with air con

manual estate
manual estate with air con

auto saloon
auto saloon with air con

auto estate
auto estate with air con

same for hatchbacks for audi a3 fabia golf etc

its like that for pretty much every model vag make

I wasn't disagreeing, I just don't understand how adding air conditioning would make it lighter and better economically, that's all... No need to get crotchety with the new boy. ;) Only kidding - I can see you do post quite a lot on here.

Do you know if it's that they remove something in order to add the air con, thereby reducing the weight?

I wasn't disagreeing, I just don't understand how adding air conditioning would make it lighter and better economically, tha

But the info. on the link you provided shows the opposite. All of the cars with AC (which is now obviously aircon) are either the same or a tiny bit slower than their counterpart. This is what you would expect.

I'm sure it means Air Conditioning.

I see what you mean, that a 1.8 20V Sport 4d takes 10.8 for 0-60, but the same with AC takes 10.6.

I guess we can just put that down to Parkers not always having the figures exactly right. Or, perhaps the AC doesn't weigh that much and with it switched off for the manufacturer's figures, doesn't make any difference to the 0-60
