Filled up the tank as I usually do and drove off --- but then started to get strong smell of diesel . looked under the car and found found fuel tank wet and pool of fuel on ground. I lifted the rear seat squab and released the plastic access cover over the fuel pump only to find that the retaining ring had slackened off and the pump had popped up. When I refitted the retaining ring I found that it only engages a very small amount on the slots and lugs and therefore can only think that the vibration of the running pump (over time -3 years) must have slackened off the retaining ring . So I have managed to wire-lock the ring ,hopefully, to prevent it from happening again.. Maybe if it can happen on my car it could happen to others ----- any comments ???????

It could be that where the locking ring locates on your car is not quite right, or the locking ring itself is not quite right, or maybe both. I've not looked at the mechanism so can't really comment further, just a few suggestions.
However, it's certainly something to look out for should any of us find fuel under the rear of the car or a strong smell inside the car. Haven't heard of this happening on any cars before, but maybe others know differently, doubtless they'll let us know.

Have you had the pump recall? ring the dealer and check as you may get a brand new one fitted free of charge, i did as my car was fitted with the dreaded siemens pump
