Hi

I have a "Y" reg Audi A4 2.0 with approx 20,000 miles on the clock and I have that the 3rd gear synchros grinds up and down when cold - if a quick change is required. I am thicking of changing the oil first to see if this reduces the grinding. I am hoping that I am not going to have to take it apart and replace the synchro.

I am interested to see if anyone has had a similar problem with an A4 with so few miles on the clock.

CHeers for any advcie offered.

Kai

you mean 120,000 miles surely ? a 7 year old car with 20,000 miles on the clock is very unlikely and for a audi manual gearbox to have problems at 20,000 miles is also VERY unlikely, in my opinion it has been clocked hence the manual gearbox problem.
i have never heard of a syncro problem before on the b6 with less than 100,000 miles on it.

Well this'll be the first. I'm not sure whether I should be grateful it's not an inherent problem, but I guess that means there is less info about. How easy would it be to get a decent manual for it?

I'll replace the oil first and then see what effect this has.

Cheers for the input

My synchro ring went in 2nd gear! Apparently although not common it is known, more so for 2nd gear.

I think mine was born from miss-gear changes which put wear on the synchro ring which lead to premature wear and the loss of 2nd gear. This was at 69K miles, so not alot of miles really.

I fixed it myself!!:approve:

Heres some pics and the thread of my synchro fix, you can the worn teeth;

You could try an oil change, certainly cheaper and easier. If it is the synchro it will be 3rd/4th synchro ring as the 2 gears share the same ring using either side of it.

Let me know if you need any more info. :beerchug:

The only thing I really concerned is the preload when putting it back together... If you had a manual I would appreciate that or any specialised audi tools etc it would be useful to know before I start (useful know hows). I've worked on many different models of car, but not audi/VW.

I'll have alook at yr thread.

Cheers for the heads up

I did have difficulty with a washer (there are different coloured washers that go in certain places) which I ended up skimming as I couldn't get the end circlip on. I only renewed the input bearing and synchro ring so the preload wouldn't have changed much if any.

Done nearly 20,000 miles since.

I did look at buying a input bearing puller but at £100 it was a tad expensive and opted to pick the plastic race out of the input bearing and make a tool that would hook into the bearing to pull it out, which obviously damaged it, but a new one was only £17. The input bearing has to come out to allow the disassembly of the gearbox.

I'll have a root about to see if I still have the printed off Audi workshop manual for the gearbox and removal, although yours maybe different, but may act as a guide.

What are your vehicle details, year, engine, model, gearbox code?

I'm pretty sure it's a B6, registered july 01, 2.0 L A4. I don't have the gearbox code - I'll look when I get home. Cheers
