My 93 avant has just developed this problem - sometimes the glowplug light does not go out so engine will not start. The light sometimes does go out and you can start the car, but then sometimes when you are driving, everything dies - glow plug light comes on again (the red airbag warning light also seens to come on at this point). (also loose servo so it can be a bit interesting trying to brake and steer).
If I do get it started, if you leave the car at idle, it sometimes just shuts itself down anway at standstill. If you leave the car the glowplug light sometimes then goes off again and you can restart. This sometimes happens again but sometimes does not. The glowplug will sometimes switch on and off several times with an audible click when sat in the car. Car pretty much undrivable as I never know how far I might get!
Connections all seem OK and I have drained off the fuel filter to make sure no water in there. Glowplugs changed at last service so pretty new.
Any ideas? ECU, fuel pump, something else.
