Think you'll have rubbing issues with the wheel arch liner by running 18's with a 60mm drop (especially on the front).
Try and keep the wheels to the same (or very close to) the original wheel offset. Mk5 wheel bearings are weak at the best of times.
I think an Et of 38-45 is about right if you've running 7.5j wheels (from what I can remember).
Seriously though. 18's will kill any morsal of performance that the 1.4 has. I wouldn't put bigger than 16's on one personally. I have 17's on a 2.0 Tdi and wouldn't want to go bigger. There's a reason only the GTi's have 18's!
as soon as i got my golf mk5 1.4 i had the same idea. first thing i bought were a set of 18's and i'll tell you now that i will NEVER buy a big set of wheels again, they seriously strangled the power out of it and apart from that the ride is backbreaking and tyre roar is HUGE!!!
best off sticking to 16's or 17's at the most
thats what i did just before i sold my golf last week and it was a billion times better. one more thing 60mm is a bit too mad for a golf, be realistic with the drop :D

IMO 17s look fine (well the one's on my Golf GT do anyway) think any bigger and you'll start to affect the handling, and as some people on here say, the performance of the car especially from a smaller engine such as the 1.4.
Oh and ET is the wheel offset ET being German (Einpresstiefe) ET45 would be a 45mm offset.
Not a clue what the ET for a Golf alloy wheel is though
