Hi, Sorry to ask a question in my first post but here goes.

Just gone to look at a GT TDI 130 privately sold. Mint car but as the turbo kicks in there is a very faint low hum. He told me about it before we drove it and to be honest I probably wouldnt have noticed it.

He could say anything but he told me he's had it checked out and the garage said it is nothing, maybe a leak on an air pipe?

Anyone got any idea what it could be and cost worst case if I was to buy it?

Nice name.

The noise could be normal, could be wear on the turbo bearing, a boost leak, egr valve fault and all manner of other things.

How many miles has the car done?

Can you find someone off here to fault code read it?

Its done 44.5K. I'm just thinking of worse case scenario if I was to buy it. I wont be able to get a fault code if there is one but I am told* its been into a garage to be checked out but all is fine.

Could be telling me anything though. What could the worst problem likely to be causing it?

Worse case I'd say is the turbo. £500>

Best case a hose. £100<

But again any advise over the net without seeing of hearing it is really only a guess.

I know its only a guess but I appretiate the input. Thanks a lot Col. Just wanting to get an idea for bartering as I am still interested in it I think. If I can get him to nock off the price of a new turbo if that is what it could be then nows the time. How much labour would it be to get a new turbo fitted or would you say about +-£500 all in

The turbo will make a whistling noise - more noticable on the 150's. Not sure about the 'hum', though mine does have a 'rumble/hum' noise sometimes when the air con/heat is on and set at "AUTO". Try switching the aircon off and see if that makes any difference.

The golden rule when buying one of the PD engined VW's is MAKE SURE ITS BEEN RUN ON THE CORRECT SPEC OIL!!!!Otherwise it will cost you £xxxx's!

Try a search on PD oil specs.. there is lots of informative info within this forum and welcome to it by the way! :-)

Cheers for the reply and welcome.

The low hum is brief just as the turbo spins up.
