I have only had my 19 gt tdi for two and I have juddering/vibrating through the steering wheel when braking, I also have a knocking when going over bumpy roads, it sounds like the susspesion strut knocking, these are both on the drivers side, I just found out that the person who had it before me hit a curb, I know he replaced the hub and had it all checked and they said all was straight,He had just put 30mm pro springs on so could this be the problem with the knocking? If you lift the car from the wing up and down you can here the knocking, I have tried tighting the top bolt but it will not tighten any more,as for the vibrating I was thinking maybe warped disc? knacked track rod end? it does seem to wonder a little amount. Any ideas please people?

The juddering/vibration under braking is probably a warped disc but this may be the result of a warped hub so the hub MUST be checked for run out when fitting new discs or it will happen again sooner rather than later.

The knocking is likely to be a corroded anti roll bar and this means dropping the subframe down to fit a new bar and bushes.

Excellent, thanks mate, what are the best bushes to fit?

I use genuine VW bushes with most new bars that I fit but sometimes people ask me to fit Powerflex for whom I am a dealer BUT the diameter of the new bar has to be established before ordering as the diameter at the bush point varies due to design changes over the original.

Best to stay genuine parts then, know it all fits

I could not agree more. The bar and bushes plus all the subframe and rack bolts required should come in at less than £100.

Well worth it considering how it will drive when done, will tighten things up

Had my ARB bushings changed recently after hearing a knocking noise for a while, the handling when turning was much better.

I have it booked in at my trusted garage for tuesday, I am getting them to check over all the steering and susspension joints, bushes etc and make a list of any problems as the car is under warranty, so any probelms the dealer WILL be putting RIGHT.

Right, I have just been and had a good look at the strut, if you lift the car from the wing up and down you can hear the strut knocking, also the top mount and nut are just spining round? is there somethng worn?

The top plate in the engine bay is spinning around?

The cup that the nut sits in is spinning

Then the nut is loose so something is wrong, possibly a failed top mount. Has the strut been out for any reason?

Yeah I found out that the guy I got it from hit a curb quite badly, he smashed the hub and drive shaft, and had to replace that strut. could it just be the top mount????????????

Possibly, it needs a strip down inspection and new top mount bearing as a precaution (part number 1J0 412 249, about £6.50 genuine VAG) and re-assembly.

Going to order mount and bearing tomorrow and go from there.

Right O got the mount and bearing changed today but what I can't work out is that when looking at the top of both struts, the cup on the new one has a smaller gap than the one on the other side and I can not get the cap on the thread as there is not enough showing, I have made sure all is tight, could it just be that the mount is new so the thread is sitting further down?

If there is not enough exposed thread there is either a manufacturing defect with the damper or the special 21-mm hex nut for the top mount is not wound down far enough. That’s a point, I have often seen the wrong type of nut used in the centre of the top mount, does it look like this?

Yep the nut is like that.just can't work it out, the thread showing on the new side is about 1/8" and on the old side is about 1/2"

Just wondering if I have put the bearing in up the wrong way? does the hollow cup of it face up or down?

lol, well there is the problem, the thing is I copied how it came off and it was up, so it was on the wrong way to start with, what a pain, now got to do it all again.

The car went in today to be checked and all was great, no worn bushes or joints, the only problem was one of the shocks was round the wrong way so the wide part of the spring cup was rubbing on the inner arch

Ehh, what! Not possible!

It is impossible to incorrectly fit a Golf 4 type front strut the wrong way around unless you cut off the alignment tag.

uhmm I really don't know then crasher, I know it is not the orignal strut as it was smashed in to a curb, you can even see where the strut has been knocking and chaffing, even when fitting the new bearing and mount I jacked it all up from the wishbone to aliegn the top and the coil and bottom cup mount were about 1/8" away from the inner arch, now it has been spun round there is the prooper gap. very strange
