I would assume the Passat would come with a 10yr rust and corrosion warranty from new

Yep, I have a similar problem, small bubbling on the drivers rear arch. Asked VW Liverpool to take a look with a view to getting it done on the 10 year warranty, seems that previous owners had that panel resprayed, they use a paint thickness gauge to see, so that panel isnt covered, still debating whether to get VW to do it, an indepandant bodyshop or just call in chips away to sort the small area out.
If its been repainted, you`re screwed, but I think that would be the same with any manufacturer TBH.

I think this will depend on where the rust is coming from - if it's from the inside under the paint, you'll be covered. If not, you probably won't...

Damage code SA0005,carrys a 5 year warranty. And what is SA0005? A closed,bubble-shaped elevation is formed. If a bubble is opened then the zinc oxide can be seen.If you remove the oxide and sand the location then circles appear which are similar to a tree disc. The cause of the damage is remains trapped by the manufacturing process of the steel.Due to condensation, the damp reaches into the cavities, resulting in oxidation. The topcoat is pressed upwards by this. There is a 10 year rust through warranty,if the dealers do not treat the zinc oxidation, within the 5 years, they are going to have to replace quite a few doors, roofs, channels, etc etc, before the 10 years have run out.

So what if a VW dealer had done the respray? I thought all bodyshops nowadays guaranteed their work.
I used to have a Mitsi Galant and after 2 1/2 years it developed rust in both front doors. I hadn't even noticed it, but it was picked-up in the annual corrosion inspection. Mitsi themselves agreed that it was water getting inside the skin of the doors and staying there because some of the drainage holes were plugged with wax. They replaced both doors with new. Never saw a scrap of rust for the rest of the 6 years I had it. Maybe all cars should be inspected for such things at every service. £30 a year for the inspection, but it saved me hundreds later on.

It is part of the service plan to inspect, and report, any corrosion damage. The warranty still applys,if any body damage, has been repaired,by a VW or Audi workshop. As not all workshops have their own paint shop, some, repair the bodywork and deliver the vehicle to an independant paint shop. They then, still have the responsibility, for the paint-corrosion warranty. On the other hand, any bodywork repairs, done, without the vehicle going through a VW or Audi workshop, looses all claim rights, for the parts which have been repaired.

The fact that one part of the body has been resprayed, may well have been done at the factory.I have experienced, that several, times, different paint thickness,on different parts of the body on new vehicles. If the vehicle, has been in an accident, and repaired,in a VW workshop, you can go to a dealer and ask them for the vehicles history.
This is a common problem. Google "Passat Rust blisters", the ukpassats site shows a removed wing where the issue was caused by the plastic wheel arch lining rubs against the paint, wears through it, then through the galvanised coating. The wing then rots from behind.
Phone VW Customer Service on 0800 0833914 & cause hell. If enough of us do it then they might respond.
My dealer tells me the wings on my 2003 TDI estate aren't original, but as I have owned the car from new, & it has never been in a accident or had anything done to the wings, then this is clearly BS as VW don't want to put right this design issue.
Also post a "your story" on BBC's Watchdog website. Again if enough people do this, we can get action.

I presume you're talking about the B5? If so you need to be on the B5 forum - I doubt you'll get much support from B6 owners here.

VAG = The worst customer care in the universe I'm afraid, the will Wiggle for Wimbledon, Deny for Denver, Lie for Lisbon, and be rude for Romford, it's always best if you buy one of their car's to accept it will be a fight to get anything done, and to plan your own service routine and hope the car was built properly.
Which although I really like my car, the panel fit compared with in house Skoda is pathetic, fuel flap swage line is out, nsr door line is out, boot lid to window is out, dash has the famous noise on acc and deceleration, think it's behind the clocks somewhere, but I got out of a 100k + Superb that had immaculate alignment of the panels, and never rattled or squeaked at all.
No wonder VW are annoyed at Skoda, Skoda are whipping them with their own whip, instead of sacking the chief at Skoda, they should send the one at VW over to him for advice on how to build a car correctly.

I'm afriad to say it has been repaired on the cheap :zx11::zx11::zx11::zx11::zx11:.
I would imagine a bump on the door/dent and they have simply replaced the outer skin of the door and not the inner. The correct replacement would be a complete new door skin.
The only way round it would be a new door to stop the rust completly. Or a decent bodyshop to strip it back down and try and reseal the the outer the inner and spend a bit of time getting right.
Thats my expereince of a car I owned 15 yrs ago that had a so called new front door replaced :(:(:(:(.

I don't think the B6 is as well built myself, I've noticed the finish isn't that good where it doesn't matter, check where the boot rams enter the car, I can see mine will be rusty within the next 3 yrs as the laquer isn't applied in the same depth the body is, it's the same on the inner wing's, and I know these haven't seen the DeVilbiss yet, anyway, someone is libel, be it VW, or the paintshop, if you want a good finish and a durable one, buy a Skoda, I don't mean to harp on, but it's like the difference between Hush Puppies and Shoeland in terms of quality, but the other way around when it comes to writing the cheque.
