View Full Version : Trim Confusion

Hi this is my first post and I am a bit of a VW novice so forgive me for what may be a very silly question, but nonetheless here it is.....
I am (finally) about to become the proud owner of my first Golf. I am looking for a 2006-07 TDI, but I must confess I have become a little confused on the trim details. I think I know the following:-
S = basic trim, not so hot
SE = a grade up from S
Match = limited edition better than both of the above
Now this is where I get confused
GT = sport seats & better trim
Sport = um, ok lost now
GT Sport = have I made this one up??
I have seen several cars, all advertised as TDI GT, some advertised as TDI sport, but only one out of all of these cars has a GT badge on the grill. Is this an add on that you can choose to put on yourself?
Could someone please help me out here?
Thanks very much
PS - to those who are suspicious at my question - yes I am a girl and yes the GT badge is therefore of disproportionate importance to me, as is colour :biglaugh:

At least you're honest lol!
Ok, GT you're pretty much on the money. If you're looking at the diesel version it will have the 2.0 140bhp engine (I have this and I think it's a great balance of power and economy.
Not sure about Sport myself.
GT Sport is basically the same as the GT but has the same engine putting out 170bhp. Most people on the forum seem to mention this being considerably less fuel efficient.
The GT Sport didn't come along until slightly later, maybe on the 56 plate? I'm sure someone can correct me on this. By that time the front had been redesigned slightly to have the horizontal slats, which the one model with the GT badge will have had. TBH I'm not sure if you only get that with the GT Sport.
Hope that's of some use to you. I'm sure one of the chaps that know's what they're talking about will be along shortly to put me right! :biglaugh:

Couple of things to add, the S range tend to come on wheel trims rather than alloys.
SE -- have black external door running strips and on front bumper until around 2007 -
GT SPORT has the new front end (black grill)

Ooooooooooooooh I have gone cross eyed now!! So many options!
seriously though Rick thanks for that, that was really helpful. I think I get it now.
Only thing is do you know if the GT sport is 2007 onwards as I can't seem to find an 06 one.
Elivis - again thanks for the response. I have seen the GT badge on two 06's cars and neither had the slatty grill, would you guess these have been added on then?
Thanks again both.

This is were it greats confusing.
The new front end on the GT series is from 2007 -
From launch they did a GT TDI, which was also known as the GT SPORT too.
What sort of budget are you looking at?
But then...

What you have there are 2 cars in a different league..
let me expalin..
The 1.9tdi (black) is 105bhp, where as the Silver is a 2.0TDI 170bhp, they also do a 140bhp 2.0tdi.
Depending on your age and no claim discounts etc, the 170bhp will cost more to insure.
Couple of things for you to look to get a nice spec inside the car dual climate control. -- Instand of the dials for the heating, you get a lcd display for each side of the car where you can set the temp.
What you need to do to start with is think about which engine you would like, 1.9tdi 105 bhp, 2.0TDI 140 bhp or the 2.0tdi 170bhp..
I will post some examples below which i think look ok taking into account your choices..

Well i will give you three guesses as to what I want ;)
I have been crunching numbers and getting insuance quotes until my little blonde head hurts........:aargh4:
I am 32 btw (tried to insure a gti when I was 19 - oh how I laughed!!) have four years no claims and three points from Aug 2005. Thus far direct line looks good. £57 per month. not bad.
I guess the next thing to do is check out the mileage.....
Once I have done that I suppose I will know whether or not this is a good price.

elephant were the best for me, but then I'm 24, 3 points on my license and had a cyclist try to mate with my passenger door a couple of years ago.
I'm a good driver really!
On mileage I'd say anywhere between 60-85k on the clock is absolutely fine, but really the Golf diesel units just keep on going, so I've looked up to 100k myself.

Thanks guys - I assume that you are fully comprehensive insured? I will give them both a whirl. PS why do all the quotes I get on these sites come up with a whopping voluntary excess? Doesn't this defeat the object of fully comp insurance (I have only ever had 3rd party f&t before as I have previous driven utter muck)??
Anyhoo - mileage on lovely beastie is 70,000. What therefore do you think of price - would you make a cheeky offer? Or is it about on the money?
rick, you failed to mention the lower suspension on the GT range, and cruise can be retrofitted for ~£150

I've always gone fully comp if I can't afford to replace the car if I write it off. However I'm happy to pay a large excess because I'm much more likely to ding it than write it off. I do that on the basis that if I ding it I wouldn't claim, I'd just pay to repair it as I wouldn't want to lose my NCB.
(My current insurance is about £1000 a year, I can't really afford to lose my NCB again!)

The GT Sport does not have dual zone climate, unless someone bought it as an optional extra.
I had a 170 TDI GT Sport, and it definitely does not have dual zone.
From launch:-
The S is bottom range, not much equipment.
The SE is well equipped, but not sporty
The Sport looked sporty, but came with the lower output engines.
The GT is like the sport, except it has the sporty engines, better alloys and a bit more equipment.
In 2007 the Sport was dropped, and the GT became the GT Sport, with a more aggressive front end and better alloys (17").
If you're after a TDI, the popular choice is the 2.0TDI in 140 output. I had a 140 and 170 - the 140 was far more reliable. The 170 has a lot of turbo lag, and then too much power at the wheels when driving off from a standstill, but the in-gear acceleration is on a par with a GTI in the overtaking range.

Yeah good point. I hate insurance :zx11: you pay a flaming fortune to insure your beloved wheel so that you have the best cover possible - then you can't use it as if you do you will never be able to afford to get insured again!! They have us stitched up like kippers really don't they?
Does anyone have any views on my potential purchase then? Good, bad or otherwise?
I have to say I am smitten with it now and if I can't have it I may cry!! I have also realised its quite a rare model as there don't seem to be many about. Again this just makes me want it more.

Out of the 2 cars picked by yourself, go for the 170 TDI, the 1.9 unit is 105ps and sounds like a tractor - it is old TDI technology.
The 1.9TDI just doesn't cut it when you've driven a 2.0TDI, it is so slow and unrefined. The "Sport" is a bit of a performance imitator. I nearly got one of those and changed my order to a 140 GT instead, I was so glad I did. I have had a 1.9TDI as a courtesy car a few times and it is appauling next to a 2.0TDI.
ten grand on a 56 plate is a bargain! I just traded up my GT Sport TDI 170 Golf for a Scirocco and they gave me £12000p/x for it - it is now up for sale at £15K, so a year younger than the one you've got your eyes on and 5 grand more!
The 170TDI is a group 16 car, if that helps your insurance considerations.

Just to add to the confusion (sorry!) if you buy a late model GT Sport (08 plate on) then they will often come with leather and armrest as standard as well as the lowered suspension and 17 inch alloys, sport seats, alarm, auto lights, auto wipers etc
You can also have a choice of the 140bhp or 170 bhp 2 litre diesal, not all GT sports are the 170 bhp as a previous poster claimed
Lovely cars but be careful to keep your keys upstairs as they are a magnet for thieves!
VW had a very bad habit in changing the specification of the GT and SPORT models annually since the Mk5 was introduced in 2004......
2004
The 2.0 GT Petrol/Diesel was launched with 2 zone climate air con as standard.
http://www.supercar.co.uk/UsedCarImage.aspx?DefaultImage=allapprovedcars&Width=369&Height=242&UC=2&Id=600611951
2005
1.6 Petrol and 1.9 Diesel SPORT models were introduced. The looked identical to the GT range but they didn't have front fog lamps as standard. On the 2.0 GT, VW dropped the 2 zone climate air con.
http://www.supercar.co.uk/UsedCarImage.aspx?DefaultImage=allapprovedcars&Width=369&Height=242&UC=2&Id=600623132
2006 (from mid 2006 onwards)
On the SPORT, VW introduced a 1.4 Petrol unit to replace the 1.6 and added a 2.0 Diesel alongside the 1.9 Diesel Unit. They also replaced the alloys and introduced new seat fabric.
http://www.supercar.co.uk/UsedCarImage.aspx?DefaultImage=allapprovedcars&Width=369&Height=242&UC=2&Id=600586768
On the GT, they gave it a minor face lift and added larger alloys.
http://www.supercar.co.uk/UsedCarImage.aspx?DefaultImage=allapprovedcars&Width=369&Height=242&UC=2&Id=600576363
2007 (from mid 2007 onwards)
The SPORT and GT range were completely dropped and replaced with GT SPORT. The model had a major face lift and the only engines available were the 1.4 Petrol and 2.0 Diesel units.
http://www.supercar.co.uk/UsedCarImage.aspx?DefaultImage=allapprovedcars&Width=369&Height=242&UC=2&Id=600536479
All these changes affected the residual values of the older models badly. According to my local dealer the only Golf model which holds it's value well is the MATCH considering the model has £3,000 worth of extras thrown in for free.

To know whether the GT or GT Sport you're looking at is a 140 or 170 2.0TDI, there are subtle visual differences.
Before the 170 came out, GTs had the all silver "2.0TDI" boot badge, as there was only the 140 version available.
When the 170 was first available in GT trim, there was no "2.0TDI" badge, it was replaced with a "GT" badge on the boot for both 140 and 170 versions (as well as the 1.4TSI petrol). The only visual difference then was that the 170 had dual chromed tailpipes fisible through the lower rear bumper trim, and the 140 didn't.
Then the GT Sport came in and the "2.0TDI" badge was back. The "2.0TDI" badge on the boot is all silver on the 140 and has a red "I" on the 170 version, and again, the 170 has the trim chrome exhausts. The GT Sport had the black bar across where the front numberplate is fixed, making it look more like a GTI.
So to summarise:-
2.0TDI badge on boot all silver means its a 140 version, either an early GT (with 16" straight 8 spoke "imola" wheels and a normal Golf front grille) , or a GT Sport (17" wheels and GTI looking front grille).
2.0TDI badge on boot with red "I" and Chrome twin tailpipes means it is definitely a 170 GT Sport (very late 57 plates and onwards will have the free leather and centre armrest).
GT badge on boot with Chrome tailpipes = 170, without is the 140, both have 17" alloys.

So many variations - no wonder people get confused!
Don't rely on what badges are on a car.
Its to easy to change them so it looks as if its a higher spec model.
maisbitt

Ask to see the registration document (V5) for the car to make sure that the model you think it is (from appearance) matches with the model listed on the V5 form.
Assuming that a rebadge hasn't occurred then the models are identifiable from the info in the previous posts.
The biggest giveaway between 140 and 170 models is the twin tailpipes with chrome trim on the 170 that come out from the bumper skirt cut-out.
The 140's have skinny twin pipes that are hidden behind the skirt and the pipe ends point down to the ground rather than pointing straight out of the back.

Something worth a mention - if you get an older 140 GT and it has the 16" Imola alloys on it, look out for cosmetic corrosion.
These are known to discolour. If there are stone chips or scrapes on the alloys then they're going to discolour anyway, but if there's discolouration corrosion and no lacquer breach damage to the affected area then you might want the wheels replaced under warranty if your car is still within it's VW warranty.
I had 2 of 4 wheels replaced under warranty this way. The 17" on the later GTs and GT sport aren't susceptible.

I have traveled more than 600 miles round trip for a car...
One thing to note on the one above is no dual climate control which is a must in my eyes when spending that amount of cash on this model..
Let me have a look and see what i can find!
Plus, the cam belt is due @ 60k miles and will cost you around £350 ish from a dealer...

lordy, 600 miles that is keen!
Thanks for the heads up on the cam belt, a guy I work with mentioned this in relation to the one in Leeds with 70k on the clock but I didn't really know what he was on about.
If you could find me something that would be absolutely fab. Just to let you know though I really wouldn't want to buy privately as I just don't feel like I know what I am doing enough.
The other thing is I could maybe use the dual climate control thing though and the cam belt to get the price down?

The first one's bang on the money Rick, but I am sooo afraid of the private seller (unjustly?), the second one is good too but its the Golf all the way for me & has been since I was 17. Sad I know.
I will bear that in mind on the cam belt, may see you soon!
Do let me know if you come across anything else you see.
You have all been so helpful and I am very glad I found this forum. I feel much more confident about making a purchase now, a little bit of knowledge is such a good thing. Also it might fool the dealers into thinking I know what I'm on about!! :biglaugh:

No problem,
its understandable to be worried buying private without the knowledge or come back incase of issues, therefore buying from a garage which offers some sort of warrenty may be a good option for you.
What i may suggest if you find a car which you REALLY like and its a private seller, you can always "employee" the likes of the AA to do a visual inspection for you. its costs but sometime better safer than sorry..

I have never used the AA or RAC before, but read the small print and check if there is any warranty with their inspection and take it from their

These look ok.. -- REMBEMBER -- Dealers advertise on ebay as the costs are cheaper than the auto trader, therefore you dont even have to bid on the car, just get the traders details and contact them direct and carry out the sale at the garage as normal.

Seems ok for the price. Looks to be "shadow blue" The light reflecting off the bonnet makes it look lighter than it is, it is a very dark metallic blue. It is still a nice colour.
If you're fussy on colour, try and look at one at your local dealership first (any spec, in that colour) before doing the travel.
Not sure if the cambelt change is due at 40k or 60k miles (I think 60k), if it is due at 60k, i'd ask the dealer to do that for you (for nothing) seeing as it is so close to needing it, and it is an expensive job (around £400 for a VW dealer to do it, £250 elsewhere). They'll probably replace the water pump at the same time, because if the water pump seizes then the cam belt will snap and cause thouusands in engine repair work.
If the dealer says that it has been done, i'd ask for an invoice to show it has been done, or if he says that he'll do it, you'll want an invoice as proof the work has been done once it has been done.
If everything falls through, my dad might be trading in his 07 plate GT TDI 170 soon, it has about 45k miles on the clock and has the DSG auto gearbox too. It is a 5 door model in Tornado red, with the autochanger in the optional armrest. It is immaculate apart from the odd inevitable stone chip on the bonnet. I reckon he'd get up to £11k part ex on it.
This isn't a formal sale post - i'm just letting you know it might be available.
In the vehicle spec on your advert, the "max net power" is listed as 125BHP, I think they mean 125KW (125KW=170PS=168BHP), so that is no cause for concern.

I HAVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:beerchug:
Drum roll please folks...........today I have become the proud owner of a 2006 (06) plate, diamond black Golf TDI GT 170 bhp, with 34.5K on the clock, full service history, one owner, HPI checked, all for the bargain price of £10.5k!! Believe me this took some negotiating.
And the kicker? From my local VW dealership, so comes with full 12 months warranty. Whoop!
To be honest with you the fact that I got this from a vw dealership means the absolute earth to me, as I have never bought a second hand car myself before (my dad, who was a mechanic and small scale car dealer always used to sort me out) and as such was so frightened of the whole thing. After all for a novice like me how the hell do you really know what you are buying? The other thing is it is from just around the corner so no 600 mile round trips for me!
I spotted this car last night on the web and when I called about it this morning it hadn't even left the compound as it had only reached them the day before. I took this as a 'sign' and the minute it appeared around the corner I just knew it was my car. I took it for a spin around sunny Warrington and must say - its bloody quick!!! Will have to wind my neck in a bit or I will get myself in trouble with this!;)
No piccies as yet but as soon as it is home (awaiting the finance company to TT the remaining dosh) I will post away. i am absolutely thrilled. :biglaugh:

That wouldn't have gone for less than £12k at my local VW dealership.
Good choice of colour too - I used to have a GT 2.0TDI 140 in diamond black, bought just 2 months before the 170 was announced.
I had to wait until the next car to get the 170 in GT Sport, and 2 months after buying that one, VW started giving free leather seats - I am so unlucky with my timing!
As you drive the 170, you might think your car is playing up once in a while when the DPF (Diesel particulate filter) does its stuff. Hopefully the dealer will have told you about this (probably not).
If you do a lot of town driving, or are stuck in traffic a lot, the DPF will need to burn off all the soot it is storing. So once in a while you might notice the car starts to idle at 1000rpm instead of 800rpm. The response will be a bit lumpy between 1200 and 2000rpm too. This should last for 10 mins once or trice a month and is nothing to worry about.
The DPF trys to burn off its soot load passively, if you do a lot of driving doing at least 50mph and between 1800 and 2500rpm, the soot should get burned off on its own, and you won't even notice it happening, as long as you've maintained the 50mph+ at 1800 - 2500rpm for at least 10 mins after the engine has warmed up.

Rick are you making the incredibly sexist suggestion that women are prepared to expolit themselves just to get a good deal on a car.........? Well you would of course be quite right :biglaugh:!!! We do and why? Because it works! No flick of hair, as my hair is 'Sarah Harding' short but I would be an absolutely liar if I denied the fact that I went there done up to the nines, in very tight jeans and a low cut top. What can I say, I really wanted that car!!

Erm, to be frank - that might as well have been in swahili to me! Let me get him home and drive him for a bit and then you can talk me through this again, s l o w l y ;) And yes black is the best colour and was always my first preference, but obviously to get this car I would have had it in any colour with the right mileage and at the right price. See this was fate!

You have all stunned and amazed me with your geekiness! But in a good way!
Finally back to Rick, as you will see from the above 'she' is a 'he' and to totally fulfil yet another girlie stereotype, he already has a name. *Drum roll* his name is 'Peper' short for peperami, as he's a bit of an animal !!!! :D
