Had a problem yesterday on My 2003 Mk4 1.9 TDI GTi, its a 130 but seems to go very quickly!!
yesterday whilst accelrating in 5th, the power suddenly was lost. it seems that the car was driving with no turbo?
I parked it up, and after about an hour, got back in it, and everything was normal again?
Anyone had experiences of turbo stopping working then fine after restart?
Cheers

its gone into limp mode, due to overboost or under boost, a fault code will show which one. due to either a perished vacuum pipe on the boost control system, or coked up vanes in the turbo. if you have a hunt around you will find lots on here about it, possible faults and cures. try vnt turbo in the search.turning the ignition off then on resets it, until it occurs next time you give it some welly.
Your Golf has gone into limp mode. You will need to get someone with vag com or similar to do a diagnostic check to find the problem. Post the fault code and I'm sure someone will help you.
Possibly over boost.

I woul dhave expected some lights to come on the dash or something when in Limp Mode, but thanks, didnt know it even existed!!
I had a quick look at it yesterday and the there is a lot of external oil around the area of the turbo.
the garage have just said the fault code ws overboost and looking at it later....not much luck with this car.....bought it with 106k on it, new dual mass fly wheel at 108K, and now this at 122k.

I had exactly the same problem on my Golf IV. My local garage said there were no fault codes but the turbo was down on pressure. They replaced an airflow sensor that they said looked knackered but that did not help. I took it to an independent VW specialist (ex-main dealer mechanic) who diagnosed it as a build up of kack in a nozzle inside the turbo, this was causing a pressure spike under certain conditions that told the ECU to put the engine into limp mode (killing the ignition just re-sets the ECU). He removed the turbo, sent it to a turbo specialist in Leeds who stripped it, cleaned it and put it back together. It now runs perfectly and I didn't realise just how much power I had lost! As this guy was a VW specialist but still had to send the turbo away I would suggest it is not a job for the home-mechanic. It cost 500 notes but this is much cheaper than a new turbo. I guess you could try treating it with turbo-cleaner before shelling out for an overhaul (I will be doing this as a preventitive measure from now on).
