Speedo needle vibrates when ignition turned on

When I turn on the ignition of my 1.8 20V GTI (AGN engine), the speedo needle vibrates. When I start the engine, the needle continues to vibrate and the tacho doesn't move. However, after about 5 seconds, all returns to normal, with the tacho showing the engine speed correctly and the speedo needle still.

The speedo works perfectly when moving.

When the engine is stopped, the speedo vibrates again for 5 seconds before remaining still.

Any ideas?

I would check all earth points under the bonnet,anything else odd happening with anything ellectric?

No other electrical items seem to be doing strange things, and earth connections seem good.

Seems strange that the fault only occurs for a short but precise time.
