Hi all - mines a 2003 golf sdi
I'm getting a fault code reading 19557 - "Motor for intake manifold flap: open or short to ground"
No problems with performance etc...
Anybody know more about this fault - is it something I should get fixed, or can I live with it ?
Is there a quick (cheap !) fix - e.g replacing a fuse, or cleaning the part - and how would I do it ?
Coincidentally ??? I have also recently suffered a flat battery...
Suggestions much appreciated

What is the chassis letter (wvwzzz1Jz ? xxxxxxx) and the engine code?

I THINK this is the motor for the heater . it is the motor that swaps the heater intake from outside of the car to Re-Circulate . IE, fresh air from outside or closed to just Re-Circulate air in car ... if so it is a common fault and not worth bothering with as most people just leave it as ' air from outside ' IF this is the prob , it is expensive to sort .. not for the part but a Pain to get to , most of the dash out , big Job .

If it is a heater issue no wonder I am confused and this is why I wanted the cars details, if your car is a 2003 Golf 4 (chassis wvwzzz1Jz3 (W, B, U or P) then six digits xxxxxx, so for example a Belgian built 2003 Golf 4 could be wvwzzz1Jz3B123456) and with the only possible SDI engine being an AQM) then the code you have given “19557 (P3101) Motor for intake flap –V157- Open circuit/short circuit to Ground (GND) 000 000” can’t have been generated by your car as it does not apply to this model. It is however very familiar to me but only on the later cars such as Golf 5, A3 8P model, Leon 2, Octavia 2 etc (with engines such as the BKD 2.0l 16v PD TDI and refers to the anti shudder flap on the inlet manifold on the front of the engine mounted in front of the EGR valve and these are extremely prone to failure. However, if your car is a Golf 4 SDI it does use the electric anti shudder flap system with a V157 motor but this would generate code “01283 Intake manifold flap motor -V157 Open circuit/short to earth”. The first step is to check fuse 34 on the fuse board on the driver’s side of the fascia panel accessible with the door open. If this is blown, replacing it will just see it blow again and the only cure is to replace the V157 unit part number 038 128 063 J which is around £330 inc. VAT but may be available for less from an agent of the manufacturer, Pierburg. Testing of the flap is carried out in Final Control Diagnosis (Output Tests 10 in VAG-COM) but this is only possible in VAG-COM when using a registered copy, not the shareware version. Disconnecting the flap motor to prevent the fuse from blowing (it also powers the Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve and Commencement Of Injection valve) is an option but the flap is there to not only prevent unpleasant shut down shudder but is also there to shut the engine down in the event of what is known as “diesel runaway” which can destroy an engine in seconds and could be extremely dangerous.

Thanks all for your assistance - chassis letter is a "W"
Fuse 34 was intact
I have now installed a new battery, cleared the error code, taken it for a spin......an the error code has not returned.
Looks like it might have been down to the battery going flat ?
Will keep an eye on it
Thanks again

I was interested in the number before the W (which means it was built at Wolfsburg) and the engine code but mention those when the codes comes back.
