For the first time ever today, my 130pd A4 hesitated a touch on startup, coughed and then idled with a noticeable shake and rough engine note. Increasing the revs to around 1500rpm sorted it all out (sounded fine and no shakes), but after 30 seconds or so of waiting for the idle to smooth out I gave up and stopped the engine. After a brief pause and restart, everything was fine - and it's been fine on the 2 or 3 starts I've done since (it's been one of those days ;-))
So... what would cause the engine to hesitate like that on startup and then idle roughly? Normally it fires up immediately even in sub freezing temperatures and, although it can take a few seconds for the valves to settle down (which is normal, I'm told), there's very little cold startup roughness. Certainly nothing like I experienced today.
Suggestions? A one-off, or symptom of something I need to look at?
