Hi, my MK2 1.6 Driver has just this week started judering when i accelerate, it doesnt do it if im giving it some, and it doesnt do it if i drive pathetically carefully, it only does it between 1000rpm and around 2500rpm where it stops and pulls normally again, it seems to be a touch down on power on the motorway too, losing speed on hills etc. Im running a weber 32/34 fitted around 6 months ago, i recently put my rocker cover breather pipe back onto the air box as i had it running into a home made filter before as my air box was full of oil, could this affect it? Oh and ever since i fitted the new carb i can smell petrol around the car,but it is definately not running rich as ive had it on a emissions test recently and it was perfect. Hope someone can help!

You may have a blocked jet in the carb, did you fit a new or used carb and did you fit a new in line fuel filter?

It was a new carb, but ive got to be honest i was a bit hot and bothered after fitting it and so put the old fuel line straight onto it, ive still got the new hoses and filters though, looks like ive got a job for tomorrow! Thanks Crasher

Take the carb top off (not an easy task, the choke linkage is a pain) and remove the jets, blow them out with carb cleaner and the float chambers too. The Weber is sensitive to blocked jets-fit a new fuel filter, that’s why one comes in the box!

those webbers are well known to have sticky inlet needles
i had the same problem with my own webber.
go on ebay and get a service kit they still do them.
my one had a inline filter built in the carb its self.
take the main petrol pipe off and just look down it for a wire filter, make sure its clean.
please don't take this carb apart without the service kit, they tend to rip the gasket in the middle of the carb as its only thin card.
once you get the kit i advise you to change the float chamber needle, its not hard to do and save's these carbs flooding them selfs which they tend to do with age.

Not if you are careful, I rarely split them. The cats and dogs filter in the inlet pipe is inadequate and in 22 years of fitting and maintaining hundreds of these carbs I have never once experienced a needle valve failure plus his carb is new. After the Spanish factory came off its very long strike there were a few that came though that were faulty and these all came from one particular source for the ones I had trouble with, a parts emporium specialising in German, Swedish and French cars.

I have seen almost as many spilt, mosty on fords i admit, but they do split.
the one on my own golf was only 6 months old when the needle got stuck open flooding the carb.
its just better to play safe in my book, the last thing you need is to open the carb no matter how careful you are and that gasket comes apart.
escorts that had a conversion from the ford carb were the worse for gasket spilts

I found the problem with my car! It was very apparent as soon as i took the airfilter off, i noticed i could rock the carb all over, and the picture attached is what i found. £22.00 for a replacement from GSF

Is that the carb rubber mount?

It certainly is, or rather was. I found out why it had split too, the allen screws supplied with the weber carb were too long, when they had the aluminium spacer clamped in place they were protruding that far they were pushing on the rubber gasket, forcing it open all the time, and eventually causing it to split right round like as shown in the picture, so to combat this i have had to grind a good 8mm or so off the length, its running a treat now, and the constant smell of petrol has gone.

all too common problem with those mounts i am sorry to say.
when i done conversions in the past i can't say i run in to that problem of the bolts being too long.
there is one that if you fit it upside down might be too long, thats the double thread one if my memory is working. but the others should have been a direct replacement.
the webber carb is so much better then the standard thing, enjoy it i sure did, extra power, extra mpg. no sticky choke
its well worth the money.
