I am trying to find out if I have a problem with my climatronic air conditioning in the passat.

Essentially it seems that the Climatronic does not switch off properly. When I press the off button, the lights go out, but the output seems to be at the last temperature displayed, through the last direction setting and i think it stays at the lowest fan speed.

Eg. I had it set at auto, 22 deg C. On the way home it seemed a warm day, so I switched off, but the heat still came out. The next day, having not touched the settings, after 10min of driving you can feel the heat coming through.

When switching off I expected it to stop the fan, and just get the flow of outside air through the vents- like in all the other cars I have had, admittedly with 'manual' ventilation controls.

In the manual it says' the climatronic should only be switched off in exceptional cases, eg fault in the system'...

So, is this the same in all passats or have i got a problem?
And does anyone know why should you not switch off the system?

Also it is having the 1st service next week, and I am getting the 'a/c service' as it is on offer- how essential is that service?

Any help appreciated
thanks
