:1zhelp:My other half owns a 2005 Polo 1.9tdi 130. Recenetly the 'ESP off' light together with the icon showing the 'skidding car' has started to light-up intermitantly. Sometimes it only stays on for a few minutes & other times stays on longer.
The car has been plugged-into a VW computer which has shown the following: ECM has no load signal from the alternator, possible wiring fault or faulty alternator. The alternator has been checked for under/over charging, but all is okay.
Can anyone please help with suggestions for resolving this problem??
Also what has the alternator to do with the ESP system/light??
Many thanks.

That fault code was stored on the ABS system?

I think I can now be more specific reagrding the results from the VW computer. This is what it said:
Diesal - Direct Fuel Injection / Glow Plug System w/pump - i
1 Fault / notes detected
17911 P1503 035
Load signal from generator terminal DF.
ABS/EDL/ASR/ESP - Bosch 8.0
1 Fault / notes detected
18265 000
Load signal - fault signal from engine control module.
Hope this helps????

What is the engine code (ASZ, BLT?) and is the chassis number before wvwzzz9Nz5Y180000 or after wvwzzz9Nz5Y500001?

The engine code is: BLT
The chassis no: wvwzzz9Nz6Y103884.
Thank you very much for your help with this.

It is a 2006 model but registered 29/09/2005.
Both codes point to a faulty alternator IF the wiring is OK. A fault code read of the central electrics unit should also be carried out to see if there is a code there as the blue L wire from the alternator goes into this unit and I would check the 2 pin wiring connector on the starter motor top clip where a blue and a brown/red wire have connections and make sure these are clean and not snapped, paying special attention to the brown/red wire which is the DFM signal to the engine ECU.

Thanks for that info Crasher. I will get those points checked out & let you know how I get on.
Presumably if all of the other checks you have mentioned are ok, then it is a faulty alternator that is turnig off the ESP system?

The wiring from the alternator to the engine ECU must be faulty or the alternator fitted is faulty. I had four exchange alternators from VAG the other week and three were faulty, only the fourth would actually work, genuine VAG exchange parts!
The very first job is to test the continuity of the brown/red wire at the alternator to the engine ECU at pin 38 where it has changed to a lilac/green wire. I have seen many of these wires fail at the connection point near the starter.

Is there a way to test if the new alternator is faulty with regards this problem? As it is doing its job charging the electrics.

In Measuring Blocks 08 there is a display group that shows the DF signal if I remember rightly but I can’t remember the group number.

I have the same problem on my A6 2.5TDI, it appeared after I had a new alternator fitted. Same fault codes from Vag com.
Incidently the ESP light comes on exactly 10minutes after startup, even if you do not even moce the car, you only have to start the engine.
It is really difficult to get at the alternator due to the V6 engine. If I look at the load signal at the engine bay fuse box/relay box/ECU does anyone know what kind of signal I should be seeing?
