Hi all - currently have a '97 1.9tdi with approaching 150k on the clock, and am thinking about changing to a 2001/02/03 model. I'm a bit wary that these early 'new-shape' models might have a few gremlins which got ironed out in later versions, but could catch me out - especially as realistically I'm looking at cars with least 100k on the clock. Any thoughts/experiences from anyone? Many thanks..

Hi Andy H,
I just bought a 1.9tdi sport avant auto 2004. I spent literally months trying to find the 'perfect' one. Test drove a good dozen then bought mine.
Shortly after buying, it started to jolt as I was coming to a stop.
This just cost the dealer £977 for a new clutch upgrade.
Moral of the story? I suppose there isn't one but make sure you get a waranty!
There will be plenty of folks on here with genuine advice for you.
What engine etc are you looking for?
Cheers
Mark

I've had a 02 plate A4 for just over two years now without any major problems. The brake switch sticks occasionally (though it's done it for a few months now and is only a £10 part). The only major thing I've had with it is that the wiper spindles are starting to seize - I've got it booked in the garage on Friday to have this fixed.
