when i start my car i feel like the battery is struggling slightly to get it turning, never not started although was a little worried
out this week and (for the first time ever) went to put the hood up without the engine going and it went dead half way up
got a jump and the guy had a tool to check it was charging - and it was
is this just a case of my battery being old and passed it do you think?

How old is your battery? Manufacturers original fitted batteries can last a long time; I replaced an Audi battery at 7 years 95000 miles. The AA and RAC guys are dead keen to sell you a new one even if your old one has not a lot wrong. It may be possible to improve it by charging. First you need to check the acid level and top up with distilled or deionised water to about 5mm above the plates. Then charge the battery overnight if you can - it will give off explosive gas so keep it ventilated - then let it stand off charge about 2 hours and check the level again. Try that and see if it improves and stays improved.
You also need to check the alternator drive belt for signs of wear and slipping which could reduce the output and affect the recharge after starting.
If your battery doesn't improve or you don't find anything wrong it's probably time for a replacement but do charge it before you fit it because they're not always fully charged when you get them (even if the seller says they are) and fitting it fully charged will improve its performance and life.
