Hi folks, first up hello! I'm Steve and I'm a brand new Audi driver. I just took delivery of my new A4 1.8T Fsi 160 SE today.
Prior to this I've been a BMW driver (sorry :1zhelp:)!!
Anyhow, long story short, Audi are much cheaper, better deals, look great and came within my car budget - so here I am!
I've only driven the car around the block so far, but looking and feeling good!
Right my problem is my ipod - I don't seem to have an AUX in anywhere on the stereo or in the arm rest, which is odd as the online spec claims I would find one?
Anyhow, when I had the BMW I had the same problem, which was solved by paying for BMW to fit an ipod connection within the glove box. Controls were limited, but playlists could be played from the stereo.
Is there a similar piece of kit for the Audi?
I have this SD card reader thing, but I have no idea how to use it. I have a fairly old PC and no way of uploading music to an SD card, plus the memory size is far to small - I'm using a 40gig ipod.
So any help would be most welcomed! :o

I have AMi and it is worth it. Get a dealer to demo a car fitted with AMI, this might help..

I have been playing with the AMI today. It's nicely integrated physically and into the MMI and the DIS. It's also nice to be able to just plug in a USB memory stick.
I made sure I got the 2009+ cable from the dealer as I believe without this you don't power your iPod from the car.
All works well.

Thats Strange, we have a SE until the S Line Exec arrives and it def has an Aux in the arm rest along with power supply. Our I Pod is plugged in to it. obviously the controls are not replicated through the car controls.

See I'm not going mad! The spec claims the SE has an AUX-IN, but I don't have one. All I have in the arm rest is a 12 volt socket and phone dock?
Ok, the AMI thing, can I have it fitted to the car now then? If so does it sit in th glove box? Also how much is it? Plus I've read you must have at leasta 4th generation ipod for it to work? :aargh4:
I went to Bristol Audi today and the guy was very rude, told me I should have had te AMI fitted as an option (company car, didn't get the choice), told me there was no way I could listen to my ipod, had no idea about the AUX port and really didn't give a ****!! :aargh4:

Sorry to hear bad attitude from another dealer, guess i am lucky to have a good one :D
AMI can be retro fitted to cars with DVD SAT NAV or built after 26th May 2008. ;)

Nice one thanks for that! As mine is a 09 newbie I'll check it out. I'm guessing it come with a fairly big price tag? I'm read around £400.00, does that sound about right? Plus I'll have to buy a new ipod, as my old thing is not 4th gen..... I could be looking at the best part of £600.00...... Joy!

And I can personally vouch for the fact that it can also be retrofitted to cars built before 26/05/08 and without DVD sat nav (my March 08 plate SE without satnav had it retrofitted by a rather knowledgable master technician at my local dealer .....but the costs ramp up significantly for an early 08 model as you need a '09 replacement audio unit. Unless you have a particularly good dealer as I did who can fight your corner with Audi UK and who actually thinks customer care matters...;) :D
Moral seems to be, find a good dealer and stick to them! And enjoy your AMI, however you get it.

I think i noticed a flyer up last time I visited the showroom price £399, not 100% sure, but your £400 sound about right.
Just for your info, as I said we have the SE and do have the ipod plugged in through the Aux socket in the arm rest, and while it does work, you have no functionality through the car system, and you have to turn it on/ off, change tracks/albums/playlists at the ipod, glad we have ordered the New A4 S Line Exec and it has the AMI as standard, roll on the end of May :D

This is a very useful link from Audi about the entertainment systems and their viability for retrofitting AMI, CD changers, Phatbox's etc

p.s. I've a Phatbox for sale :biglaugh:

Shame they forgot the AUX IN on my SE!!
I'm gonna get a couple of SD cards (found a thread which show me which ones work) and use them until I save up some cash for the AMI and new ipod!

Nice one, thanks for that! I'm gonna try my local Audi dealer again (this time in the week and not the weekend, maybe they will be more helpful!). Ill go for the AMI in the end, just got to save some cash!
Would I be right in saying that you don't get AUX in with DVD nav?

I've got sat nav - still has an Aux socket under the arm rest
I also have the B8 SE and that has a Aux in addition to the DVD sat Nav.
Seems to me that you should have the Aux connection as advertised and if you do not then I would ask for the AMI or the Aux in to be fitted now.
I was missing the sound card facility (because I went for the full MMI) and when I complained that it was not what was advertised or expected Audi UK retro fitted the AMI for me free, even though I would have paid the initial factory option cost.
Check your brochure and if it should be there then tell them its missing and ask what are they going to do about it for you. Be prepared to negotiate though and perhaps they will meet you some or all of the way.
Good luck
Roger

The AUX IN socket is fitted in the armrest. It is a standard jack socket - same size as fitted to the headphone lead. It is located under a flap on the side opposite the 12v power outlet. You may not see it if you just open the lid of the arm rest unless there is very good light as the protective flap hides it. Trying running your hand around the surfaces. It just allows the headphone audio feed to be used with no control ability, but will therefore work with any MP3 player etc. suitable jack to jack lead available at Maplins etc.

Have you checked in the armeest on the side opposite the power socket? Suggest you run your hands around the side, as the socket is located under a black sprung protection cover, and is not immediately visible if not brightly lit. Under the cover there is a standard jack socket. Just needs a jack plug to jack lead with same size jack plug as on the headphone lead (Maplins etc stock them).
That will allow the audio to be fed into Audi system, but no control. AMI is required to provide function control, which is a dealer retro fit option for the glove compartment.
When I had my car delivered in Oct 2008 I was expecting the audio in jack as mentioned ion this thread but the dealer explained that because I had ordered AMI it was an either / or option. Not sure if I was being fobbed off but with AMI and SD available I had enough options for music sources!

If you want to plug the headphone output from a device into the AMI, just buy the relevant cable for £25 and you're done. ;)
