1998 Passat Estate alarm

I believe that this socket in the boot LHS is to enable/disable alarm. Does anybody know exactly what it is & does. I have uploaded picture and attempted attach. picture is me holding key/activator near to socket.

you are right it is an overide switch for the alarm

Thanks for that. Can I ask if the status is (re)set if you remove the battery, always resetting to ON when reconnected. Under what circumstances would you want the alarm disabled? And the little "key" contains a code correct for an individual car?

usually the alarm resets if you connect the battery
and the key will be individual
