View Full Version : Warning lights?

Saturday afternoon, and I'm driving my new (to me) 2.0 S Passat (2002) through slow traffic, when a warning lamp illuminates.. the triangle with the circle around it, on the left of the speedo.
The handbook says this is the Electronic Stability Program warning...
This light stays on a for a few minutes, until I get to my destination. A couple of "switch off, wait a few minutes, switch back ons" later, and the light clears.
After doing my shopping, the warning makes a brief re-appearance, to be replaced by the "engine" symbol below it. On the drive back home, the original warning light makes a few momentary returns, but the "engine" light stays on.
Leave the car for about an hour, engine light still on, but no other warnings.
Leave the car for a further 2 hours... all warning lights gone out, not to return (yet?)
Any suggestions as to what could be the cause, and the likely cure?
Many thanks
Andrew

Hi You need to have a fault code read
Yep, currently waiting to hear from the Garage I got the car from (1 1/2 weeks ago...) about when they can look at it...
Thanks

Could be your brake light switch, get someone to check your brake lights when you depress the pedal.
Did the ENGINE WORKSHOP warning come on on the central warning panel??
When my TDI Passat had this particular fault the ESP light illuminated along with the GLOW PLUG light and on the central warning panel ENGINE WORKSHOP illuminated. The brake light switch costs about £7 and takes approx 30 mins to 1 hr to replace.

No, the only lights to come on were the ESP warning, and the engine symbol beneath it, both within the Speedo disk.
When I get home, I'll get the Missus to check that the brake-lights are working correctly (she has the Passat today...)
Thanks

All 3 brake lights (and all other lights as well) are working fine, so I guess I can cross-off the Brake light switch as a possible reason...
(which reminds me, still waiting for the dealer to get back to me about runing a diagnostic test...)
Thanks

Well, I took it back to the (non-VW) dealer, who said they would diagnose it. I asked if they can read the codes - yes, of course we can... we have all the diagnostic kit, you know!
So, a whole day later... "we found a "coolant temperature sensor error" that went away after we cleared the ECU, but we couldn't read anything else, as we can't read the ABS system"...
They are now (supposedly) going to get VW to run a diagnostics on it for me...

Update: True to their word, the place I got the car from arranged to pick up the tab from my local VW dealer... who scanned it, and diagnosed a faulty Engine Coolant Sensor. After replacing the sensor, no further codes were read, and so far, no warning lights have shown!
I'll keep an eye on it, but so far, it seems to have fixed the problem!
One thing they did say is that the "Intake Breather Hose" is broken, but that the replacement part is on back order, and they cannot tell when it will be in stock. In the mean time, they have carried out a "temporary repair".
Any idea where this hose is, and how much a replacement will cost once they can be obtained? (car is a 2002 2.0 S Petrol)
Thanks all
