do the lights on the dash dim when you try to start the engine?
does the engine turn over at it's normal speed or is it a bit sluggish?
could be alternator or battery, there might be enough juice in it to turn the engine over but not enough to run the fuel pump etc, have you tried connecting aset of jump leads to it with the second car running?

lights on the dash arent dimming down yet and engine still turns over at normal speed.still havnt tried jump leads.didnt think it would make a differance.will try 2 day but.everything is worth a go.

car started with jump leads.took bout 10 seconds though.noticed when i put the foot down the car started jumping as if it was misfiring.it died out again after a few miles.but it started with the key this time.would it do this with the altanator was packed in.

the mis fire is a bit worrying but that could be due to a low voltage, my guess is that a new alternator should do the trick though.

if i get away with just the alternator il be happy enough.il give it a try this week and see how it goes.il post back and let you know.
thanks for the help.
