I have a 2001 Passat 1.9 SE TDi and I would be grateful if someone could tell me what is the recommended mileage at which the timing belt should be renewed?

The yearly service has just been performed at 49000 and the notation on the service report says a timing belt renewal will soon be 'overdue'.

Thanks very much for your help.

It is overdue now being 8 years old without having the belt changed.

The interval is 60,000 miles or I think 4 years if not having reached 60k.

If it were mine I'd get it changed as soon as along with the waterpump.

Gee! I never thought of it as being eight years old. I guess I'll have to pawn the family silver for this. Thanks for the wake-up call.

Hi rodaire,

It may not be too expensive - I just had the belt and waterpump changed for £235 and that was genuine VW parts. HTH,
Cheers,
Lee

Thanks Lee. I checked with the outfit that does the services on my Passat and the figure they gave me was approx £320. The problem is that the other nearest VW repair spot is 75 miles away!
