It does sound like the dreaded curse of the Multitronic.

Does it struggle into reverse?

It may be best to get the gearbox oil changed. Don't go to Audi they'll just tell you its sealed for life, probably best finding a good independent specialist.

Changing the gearbox oil can prolong the life of the box.
