hi there all, would be very very greatful if somebody could point me in the right repair direction before i change all my tappets,i have a 00 audi cabriolet 1,8 20v (adr),and when its cold there is a fairly loud tapping noise which last for 3 or 4 mins and then completely goes,as the car only has 27k miles im ruling out wear and tear, anyway would be delighted if anyone out there could share some light on this, cheers jonathan

first thing to do is an oil and filter change, and use a good synthetic oil.

hi there and thanks for your reply,i changed the filter(geniune audi) and oil only 2k miles ago,i had valvoline synpower 0-w40 fully snythetic in it and as it was still tapping i thought this oil was too thin so i replaced it with duckhams 10-w40 semi snythetic only to find the exact prob???,as i said its only for the initial 3to4 mins of driving and then it completly goes??,would really appreciate any more idea`s,thanks again jonathan

Hi It could be the camshaft hydraulic chain tensioner you hear.

thanks for that,i know the cam is on a timing belt but you reckon there is a timing chain under the rocker cover?? is there any quick fix for this and is it any harm to leave it as it is?? thanks again jonathan
