possibly looking at needing a new engine for my 2001 a3 quattro..ARY code
do i need an ARY code engine..or would any other 180bhp audi engine work as a direct replacment ie AJQ, APP, AUQ,
or even still a BAM, or APX or APY from a TT/S3 drop straight in as a replacment??
any advice would eb appreciated!

As far as I can see you would be OK with an AUQ, ARX or AUM which is straight out of a later Golf 4 GTI T. The 150PS base unit is the same as a 180.

I've a 2001 Audi A3 TDI SE that's got a hole in the block (she threw a rod). Is it worth replacing the engine for about £1500 which is half the mkt value or should I cut my losses and scrap it?

£1500 sounds very cheap, is that including labour?

labour 600+VAT plus 900 for a used engine.
genuine audi engine costs 1900.

Taking it as being a 130PD TDI with an ASZ engine, a genuine short block (bottom end) is £1600 inc VAT and an exchange base engine (head and block) is £3400.

I need an ASV (110bhp). I'd need a long block. Not worth installing a new one. Would it be viable to install a second hand engine from a Volks-Audi breaker or am I just wasting my time and money?

An exchange ASV is a lot cheaper than are ARZ but I can’t tell how much from home. The ASV was used in many VAG products and should be easy to find and it is a reliable engine if serviced regularly. If you can find a good used unit, then yes it is very worthwhile doing it. Look at it this way, two years ago I bought a 2003 Octavia VRS with a fraged engine and put an exchange VAG long block and turbo in with a new clutch/flywheel and much else and it cost me just about what the car was worth and that was at cost to me with no profit, VAT or labour taken into account.

ok..so would that mean id lose 30 bhp? or due to the turbo..fuel rail and ecu set up in my quattro, would it still have the same power output, i was thinkingh, if im gonna spend the 1500 on a replacment engine, that iv seen listed on ebay with 3 month garuntee on the engine that has only around 30,000 miles on it..would it be worth buying an s3 engine at the same or similar amount..my dads mate who is a mechanic would be swapping it and would be charging next to nothing on labour, he normally does all work on our family cars

No, the base unit is the same, no matter if it is an AUQ, ARY (180) or AUM (150). The only difference between these two power levels is in the mapping of the ECU. If you were to fit an ARY in an AUM car it would have 150PS, if you fitted and AUM in an ARY car it would have 180PS, the engines and turbo’s are identical. The S3 (typically an AMK or BAM) installation is extremely different to the 150/180 engine but when you take it back to the base unit minus turbo, it is nearly the same. To get the 225PS of a AMK/BAM would mean ECU, wiring harness, exhaust system, turbo, intercooler system etc etc. It isn’t like in your dads day when he and your granddad could pull a 1.3 Kent out of a Scort/Tina on a Saturday morning, drop a 2.0 Pinto in and be driving it to work on the Monday-those days are long gone.
