View Full Version : Revs increasing when changing gear

Hi :1zhelp:
Can anyone help with this problem. I have a 2003 Passat 2.0 SE which has done about 63,000 miles. When changing gear the revs seem to increase and then fall back again. At first I thought it was a slipping cluch but have since proved it is not. It seems to happen after about 1/2 hour of driving, which is really annoying.
Although my Passat is not the quickest car I've driven, it seems to accelerate fine and is fairly responsive, if I push it.
I'm reluctant to take it to a dealer, as it's such an intermittent fault and would cost a fortune.
Thanks.

Is this an auto gearbox?
I have a V5 Tiptronic. I have similar symptoms. Thinking it was the gearbox, I took it to a specialist, who serviced the 'box and reported everything to be fine with it. However they discovered the ECU had error code V60 which they say can cause these symptoms.
Can anyone shine any light on this problem please?

Don't hold me to this but it may be possible that there is a switch on the clutch pedal (if manual of course) which kills the engine speed when depressed for smoother gear change. If switch is acting up this could be the source of the problem.

Don't take this the wrong way, but it's not the driving style, i.e not releasing the throttle early enough that's doing it (a la double declutching for example) ?? If it's intermittent enough given the same driving style, then there could be an issue - perhaps with some element of the clutch itself which only occurs when warmed up - master cylinder perhaps?

Thanks for your replies, it is indeed a 5 speed manual. I only really notice the problem when changing to 1,2,3, and the odd thing, is that it only plays up when the car is warm. I was thinking it may be the idle control valve sticking (if its got one!).

Polo 6n 1.9tdi Engine Revs When Changing Gear
I have a Polo 1.9tdi 100 and ever since I got it I have had a fault with the engine revvin excessively when changing gear.
I have to point out when I got the car the cruise control didn't work and one day it started revvin excessively when changing gear and to start with I thought it was me holding the gas on a bit. I then tried the cruise control just for interest and it worked instantly!
I was glad the cruise was now working but now everytime I change gear the revs go up around 500 before they drop back down!
It doesn't do it if your not moving and rev the car but if you let the car roll at even 5mph knock it out of gear or hold the clutch in and rev it, it keeps goin once uve let the gas off and then falls back down!
Ive had the car to VW and there is no faults on the system and they are telling me there is nothing wrong with it and they all do it! I know this is rubbish as I have driven a new diesel golf and it doesn't do this at all.
All I can think of is the cruise system is some how effecting the amount of fuel it is putting in the engine but I have had no joy finding out the exact problem!
Thanks
