Hello all, my first post and I want you opinions!

I have always loved the Coupe shape and due to the credit crunch I have had to sell my 06 A4 Sport and I need another car for much less money. Naturally I don't want to spend money on a cheap Ford as I love Audis but money is tighter than a gnats chuff. On Saturday morning I am viewing a low mileage (42,000) 2.6e 1996 Coupe, I have read up on the threads on what to look out for bodywork and mechanical wise but none of the topics talk about how much this car is worth. Now, given these tough times we live in, I am looking for a good deal but I also want a great car that won't let me down and still looks great. The car has FSH (mostly main dealer) and from the chat I have had already with the owner everything sounds genuine. Assuming that the car ticks all the right boxes (it is not concours immacualte but in very good condition for its age) how much is a car like this worth in the current climate? I won't say what he is asking for it as I don't want to influence your informed replies!

Your estimates are welcome,

Cheers, Emgee! :notworthy

because of the type of car and age, the credit crunch hasnt really affected prices much. they are worth about £600 for something with an mot, upto £1500 or so for a minter. its down to what you are prepared to pay for it, depending on the condition. you will find them advertised for more, but they may be really stunning examples.

Well it is advertised for nearly £1000 more than that. I suspected that it was right near the upper limit for this model of coupe but I thought a very late 96 one with such low mileage would go for more than £1500 to be honest. If I can haggle him down to that then I would be pleased. I have asked if the cam belt has been changed and it hasn't - I guess that is something I need to address. How much would a mechanic charge for that on the big V6 - £250 perhaps?

It is still a lot of motor car for that sort of money - a 13 year old Audi or a 7 year old Ford? Easy choice really!

Thanks for your estimate - any more opinions from the board before I inspect the car?

be warned, cambelts on audis can be a basterd sometimes, for a decent place to do it, i bet they would charge about £400

The cam belt also drives the water pump so it is advisable to change that too at the same time. Then you dont have the worry of the pump seizing up and shredding the belt that blows the engine

not nice

My mobile mechanic did the belt and pump plus a CV joint for £400
