Hi all,

First post here, been reading for a while, lots of great info. I am in the early stages of planning my new car purchase, need it by June.
I am looking at a 3 Touring 330d Auto and the A4 Avant 3.0TDI. I have been in the BMW camp for a while however the A4 is definitely a strong contender.
I just saw that Audi officially launched this week the 2.0TFSI DSG Quattro (http://www.fourtitude.com/news/publish/Audi_News/article_4627.shtml) and that looks like a potentially great car. Looking at Audi official stats, it is not that far off from the 3.0TDI, economy is good, and it is priced competitively.
Clearly the torque level on 6 cyl diesel is great but given that diesel is 12-15% more expensive at the pump, it is really pretty close in terms of petrol cost. And there is the small matter of GBP 3,800 price difference...

2.0TFSI Quattro DSG List price Exec SE: 28,930 S Line Exec: 31,375
211bhp
Torque 350/1500-4200
175g CO2
0-62mph:6.6 sec
Mpg: urban: 30.1 extra-urban 43.5 Avg:37.2, 90kg lighter than the 3.0TDI

3.0TDI Auto: Exec SE: 32,695 S Line Exec: 35,140
240bhp
Torque 500/1500-3000
186g CO2
0-62pmh: 6.3 sec
Mpg: urban: 31.7 extra-urban 45.6 avg: 39.2

My question is for the current owners out there of the 2.0TFSI is how much do you like that engine and how is the mpg in real life? I drive about 14K mls a yr mostly commute and w-e travel. I have yet to drive either A4s due to workload but planning to do this over the next 2 weeks, however I can't imagine I will be able to locate a 2.0TFSI quattro with DSG demo for a while...
Thanks in adavance for your input

I have a 2.0TFSI on order. This engine seems well suited to the A4 and has some very good write ups.

Re mpg, I recall a thread in which owners were not getting anywhere near the official combined cycle mpg for some of the A4 engines (including the TFSI petrols).

Re the 3.0TDI, there have been varying reviews....some positive, some negative (suggesting the engine weight + Quattro doesn't help the cars' driving dynamics). It depends what you want from the car. Certainly, the torque & straight line performance on the move should be impressive.

Enjoy your deliberations

I also had to choose between the 330d and the 3.0TDI, although I was after a manual. The 2.0T wasn't out then or it would have been a contender. In the end it was a combination of Quattro, the look of the A4 and the better attitude of the Audi dealership that swung it for me.

I think the 3.0TDI is a great engine. It has relentless torque from 1200-4000rpm and very little lag. Overtaking is a breeze at any speed and it makes a lovely noise - something I never thought I'd say about a diesel! When I first got it, it did feel a bit nose heavy compared to my Volvo V50, but I haven't thought about that in months.

Mind you, it does take a long time to warm up that big cast-iron block. I mostly do longer trips at weekends, so it's not too bad (get 35-38mpg depending on right foot weight) but it's a killer on short trips in the cold - typically 20-25.

I understand the quandary. You'd basically be paying nearly 4k for the extra two cylinders and a little bit of extra performance, mainly at high speeds where you're less likely to use it. That's a lot of extra toys, or a lot of cash left in your pocket. Nothing to do but have a drive of them both and see which you like best. If it's the 3.0TDI, then do you like it £3800 more.

Thanks for the replies.
I have no doubt the 3.0TDI by the mpg is a great car but I am a bit concerned with the mpg 35-38mpg is OK but 20-25 that's a killer!
On paper the 2.0TFSI is a winner but I will have to test drive it, and I am pretty sure one will never get close to the 37pmg quoted by Audi.
I am keen on a change tho from BMW and the A4 is certainly a very attractive proposition. Maybe I should just forget about mileage and gte the S4;)
BTW any idea when the 3G MMI will be available on the A4? Great system but certainly not worth getting a Q5 for, way too bland looking!
