audi cabriolet (80) hood

I seem to have a problem! I have a R-reg cabriolet which has a manual hood. when i press the hood release botton (inside drivers door) i hear a whirring noise but the panel doesn't pop up to allow me to access the hood.

any ideas warmly received.

check wiring loom in boot opening
they break in boot hinge loom and the roof thinks the boot is open so will not let roof open
