I have finally worked out how much my Passat B5.5 130 petrol uses. 1litre/1500 miles. Does this sound about right?

Not sure what our passat does, will have to check when I did the last oil change. Consumption does seem to relate to the type of driving you do, cold starts will use more oil. Saying that, the times when we have had the warning light come on was during motorway driving. The moral being - check the oil level before you travel and keep a litre of oil in the boot.

Not too sure about Pertol but my TDi uses about 0.5L every 4,000 - 6,000 miles or so

Something sounds wrong there Malc. It seems a bit excessive.

If you do a lot of town driving it doesn't help, but still...

I'd have thought using that much oil you would be able to smell it in the exhaust. Can you?

Paul

No, Paul no smell of oil that I can tell. It to me sounds excessive. I guess it is tough **** and I will have to put up with it or until it breaks :p I am certainly nor spending any money on it.

It has always done this right from when I bought it.

I do now keep a litre in the boot which is why I know how much it uses. I just go off the warning light ;):beerchug:

From what I can recall, I remember reading that the 2.0 petrol Vag engine does use a bit of oil.
Its a bit more than most cars use but I wouldnt worry, especially as its not smoking at all.
My Passat has the 1.8t engine and uses 250ml at most between oil changes( every 4-6 k miles).
I use my car in mixed driving 50:50 town / motorway and its done 127k miles.
Some cars use no oil at all!
I had an Audi 80 1988 1.8s with 162k miles when sold and that used no oil at all!

1 litre per 1000 miles is too much so you are getting close to a problem.

Per 1500 miles Crasher. There is no evidence of oil in the water. The car I believe does not chuck out smoke. It does cost a bit in oil mind, but if it needed any serious work on it I would bin it. Straw, camels back etc.. ;)

Sorry, I didn’t word that well. I meant to say “I think 1 litre per 1000 miles is too much so you are getting close to a problem”
