Hi
Just in process of ordering a new 09 reg A3 Sportback 1.8 TFSI Sport just wondered what peoples thoughts were on my options list....
1. 1.8TFSi engine. Currently own a 2.0 TDi 140hp A3 07 reg but because of my low mileage thinking of going for an equivalent petrol. Anybody own a 1.8 and comment on its abilities?
2. Ice silver metallic. Currently on my on 07 reg A3 and i think i prefer it the most easist to clean and maintain but not sure whether meteor grey might be too dark?
3. Bluetooth mobile prep without the cradle. I cant really see the point of spending £100 plus for a cradle versus the bluetooth prep all i can find it does is charge the phone.
4. Adaptive headlights with xenons, daytime running lights. Always wanted xenons but up until dec 08 these werent an option on the sport model but now they are...bit pricey but i think theyll look great and be useful at night.
5. 5 spoke design alloys. Have these currently on my A3 but dont like the new standard sport wheels so id like these on again..easy to clean and i think set the car off make it look more agressive.
Anyway any thoughts and comments or suggestions all appreciated before i sign away!
Thanks

unfortunately with the sport edition you can't get LED daylight running. Only on the S-line package.
as for the mobile with the prep, the cradle now comes in the drivers arm rest. Hides it out of view.
I agree with the paint colour...as for meteor grey, hopeully someone would be along shortly. I couldn't see it being too much of a problem.
As for the adaptive lights...i was going to have these as an option. However, xenon work just fine, better than the hologen bulb. Also, if the adaptive light unit breaks (for whatever reason) it's expensive to replace. Its best to have these if you live or drive country roads that are dark.
I truly recommend you went for the S-line package, nicer trim, with the xenon plus+adaptive, these will come with the lights. -LED. Look nice in the day. I own a sport edition, i think you'll like the s-line. Usually costs £1500 on top.
Also do you like your music in the car? Perhaps the bose sound system. I ordered mine in DEC. My spec in the tag line will give you an idea. Hope this post helps! :)

Thanks
I had Meteor Grey on my old A6 2.7TDI quattro Le Mans - It's not that dark but dark enough to hide the dirty in winter - What about quartz grey that is nice - Looks like a darker silver
I have to agree that you should look at the s-line or maybe upgrade further to black edition for the extras - But you would only get 1 colour!!! :biglaugh:

Thanks for the comments however im a bit confused...
In dec 08 Audi produced a new brochure version 2 in which it has i quote...
Adaptive headlights, swivelling headlights for improved illumination of a winding road.
Includes Xenon plus headlights with LED daytime-running lights
option on all models.
The sport never had an option on this up until dec. When i contacted the dealer he said no probs so im assuming its correct?!
Anybody have any experience of this option? I assume its adaptive lights with xenons, daytime running lights. Not sure whether i get headlamp washers? I was told that washers are mandatory if you buy xenons is this true?
I appreciate the advantage of the s line but wikth my budget ill have to stick to the sport just with my options....

You get daylight running, standard on all the models. Even with the Hologen.
But the LED DRL (like you see on the new a4 and a5's) was with the xenon plus package only. However, i thought i'd look at the brochure...perhaps im mistaken? Because, you can't have it if you opt for the xenon plus package. However, if you went for the adaptive lights as mentioned then you can have them in all the models variances.
"Adaptive headlights,
swivelling headlights for improved illumination of a winding road.
Includes Xenon plus headlights with LED daytime-running lights"
As you mentioned for £980 on the sport model. With the s-line additon you get to save £300 if you don't need the adaptive lights and gone for the xenons on their own. I should reckon you do get headlamp washers as it says 'includes xenon plus headlamps'. When you read the blurb for the XNON+ it mentions them. Also i think it's a legal requirement in the UK for all cars with xenon to have them fitted. (something about dirt distorts the light. There fore dazzles other drivers)
What other options have you considered?

I was initially tempted with a Black Edition S Line as the APR the dealer is offering is only 5.4% and the price of it was around £23000 which isnt far off what my options list will come to for the new A3.
That said i still want bluetooth, the cradle it seems for an extra £130 is just for charging the phone as long as i have the bluetooth connection pack low in the arm rest the connection should work even if i have it in my pocket.
Out of my list the Black Edition with the exception of the bluetotth fills them all and more... the s line trim package including xenons and nice wheels would suit me EXCEPT for the colour.
Im just very wary of black. It never seems to look clean and im concerned about scratches showing up etc etc. That said if the dealer rings me with a tempting offer i could be persuaded. Plus you also get the black grill headlining as well as the BOSE system.....just wish he would call me back with some figures then i can start haggling!
Using hire cars for work really when it comes to my own i would like xenons and phone prep as well as nice looking wheels and good paint colour in a reasonable spec car. My current Sport suits me just be nice to upgrade.
Does anyone else think the latest sport wheels dont suit the car?

I was looking at the pricing guide. I think you don't need to have black for the black package. There seems to be a +next to ibis white. So i think you could opt from having it all in black...
However the only thing in that case i wouldn't like with this package is the interior inlays. I have piano black already, IMO i like the silver matt brushed ones more. They seem sporty.
Have you even considered the 1.4 T FSI? This car is mis-understood. But its faster than the 1.6 and 2.0Tdi. It only slightly slower than the 1.8, therefore i don't justify spending £1620 for it. (s-line version) The only prob with the 1.4 is there is a huge waiting list for it, wouldn't sunrise me if they told you this summer...(if they said july, your prob best of holding on for the 59 plate) and the black edition is not available.
The difference in engine spec is; 136 on the 1.8 and 126 on the 1.4 (unless you plan to take the car to a race track, all seems well. If not, your more concerned about saving fuel and NOT loosing your license. Than the 1.4 tops it.)
0-60 on the 1.8 is 8.0 secs, the 1.4 is 9.6. Not a major difference. You will certainly notice it. Also for taxing purposes the 1.4 would cost £120 to tax whereas the 1.8 would cost £145. (ok, £25 isn't much of a difference)
I went for the 1.4 purely because of the price difference. So i knew i could get moe features on the car. Also, someone in my family has a VW polo GTI which is due for its final balloon...she has been told its in minus equity right now because its a 1.8 GTI...no one wants one.
However, test drive both and make the decision for yourself ;)
Im too wary of black. It's smart when its clean, dirt isn't too noticeable. But i hate the most, if bird dropping marks! On black it shows up like a red thumb. You could enquire about the white...i think its the only exception colour you can have on this package or the red. They prob don't mention it as black is prob not wanted, therefore to get rid of the paint they come up with the black package! lol
(if you look in the paint colour section of the guide, there is a cross there. Then on that same page on the bottom right it says it is included in the limited black edition range. ) I know with the white, it gets dirty. But for me, i have owned white before and the roads i use daily or around my area arn't bad. Stone chips and scratches are more a concern to me. Also I love washing the car :D
Also with the dealers, shop around. You prob find a better deal else where. (still gives you 5%, but a better deposit rate also. So allows you to put more options on) Also, if you havn't really had a quote yet for a main dealer. You'd be surprised. You may get a discount, especially now. Also, come up with a deal you think is tempting to you and use this at the dealer. They prob consider to say ok, give us your credit card or £1000 today and the deal is done.
Let us know how you get on ;)

You must have money to burn in this current economic climate if your buying brand new!
I'm looking at changing my A4 for a year old 3 series BMW and the amount of depreciation suffered by cars in the first year is just huge! My budget would stretch to a 320d in basic spec but going for a year old with 10-15k on it I can get a high spec 330d for the same money.

I was going to buy a used A5. But decided to opt for an ex-demo A3. The thing is it was up for more than the price of a new car and the dealer wasn't prepared to lower the price as they had given me an initial discount on the finance. So opted for a new car instead with all the extras i want.
Cars have always had depreciation. I know the economy at the moment isn't doing great, but there is excellent finance deals on new cars to be had right now. I'd also be looking to change it in a few years time if something new comes out and tempts me.
I think whatever way you look at it, no-one wins with cars and it has to be accepted. Did you watch last nights ITV prog called 'tonight' ? It was about the car market. If you missed it and you got some spare time check out the ITV catch up and look for 'tonight'. I found it by looking under the 12th Jan. I'll give you the link, but the instructions mentioned incase the link doesn't work; http://www.itv.com/CatchUp/Video/default.html?ViewType=5&Filter=33802
It mentions don't go for gas guzzlers. Tax, running costs, insurance, service is too expensive. But most gaz guzzlers are more desirable cars.
In my opinion there is an advantage for a new car, however used has many advantages over a new car...
As mentioned, check out that prog. Some very interesting points they make. Surprisingly they recommend not holding onto cars-to run them into the ground. Either way, i look at it as MOST people need a car to get to work. How they go about it is an individual matter. Some people don't care or have money to buy new or up to 3yr old cars, therefore they can make do with a car thats 5+yrs old. Whereas some want reassurance and no hassle of of maintenance, so opt to change the car every 3-4yrs. Warranty and stability.
With some of the finance deals out there today, getting a new car is a bargain. (in my case) It also depends on how your wishing to finance it also...
I have a HP agreement (financed to own the car outright) but thought there isn't much point in hanging onto a depreciating asset. So now going to opt for a PCP. Many would disagree a PCP is a waste of money, others would agree its worth it. Personally, i think its individual.

Ill try and answer all the comments but thanks in the meantime for all your thoughts its exactly what i need to get my brain thinking!
First of all i certainly dont have money to burn i work for the govt!!! The situation is this i bought my last A3 on PCP and put down the maximum deposit which was £8k. That got me a brand new A3 Sport 2.0TDI with 6 cd player and a couple of minor options incl metallic paint. I love the car had a few problems along the way but i put that down to bad luck on my part anyway thats costing me £130 a month.
So recently i started to see finance deals on the Black edition of 5.6%. Tempting i thought ill enquire as to what the situation is with my PCP deal as im half way through the 3 year deal. After contacting my local dealer i get a call 2 days later to say yep you can upgrade to a new sportback 1.8TFSi sport wth xenons and phone prep for between £220 and £230 a month?!
What is it i asked £220 or £230? Its between them so anyway like pulling teeth i ask how much have you valued mine at? £11.5k!! That did it for me its worth far more than that with under 8k on the clock after 18 months (i have a hire car for work)......so anyway re contacted the dealer over the weekend and got through to the last salesman i dealt with who seemed to be willing to haggle. Anyway long story but after 2 days im still waiting for him to call?!
Is it me or just my local dealer but do i have to beg them to sell me a car??!!!!
Back to my possible new car....im not desperate and i was looking at new only because if i sign up for a new 3 year deal i can take advantage of the following;
1. Low cost of credit
2. New car with full warranty for 3 years
3. Recovery for 3 years
Im trying to get the monthly repayment down to £200 for the new sportback but yet to hear back maybe theyve just fell off their chairs????!!!
I also had a thought of BMW 320d then saw the cost of new and i couldnt match it with the audi. Looked at VW this week with the new golf but before i start on the price of an GT TDi im not far off an A3.....then add on 2 zone climate control....xenons not an option and last time i visited they too couldnt match the audi deal.
Yes i did watch the tonight programme and while its frightening how much new cars lose i think its a personal choice. Some at work say im mad some say wow how much are you paying. As far as im concerned i couldnt afford to spend £20k on a new car, nor would i part (if had it!) with that sort of cash.So much so the way i see it is i get a brand new audi with the stability that comes with that and all for what i can probably scrape together in overtime per month. Call me boring but i like a bit of stability with cars!
I think it depends what you want from your car. Some at work drive 10 year old plus VW's etc yet go on cruises twice a year personally i prefer a new audi and no cruises!
How much are you are paying tloinhart if you dont mind me asking?
By the way i dont think white would be an option for me just not my cup of tea but ill defintely look at the 1.4 and if i ever hear back from the local dealer might just order one in 2009!!!!!!!
Keep the comments coming!

I agree chiefwiggumpi with the comment about stability. Its the same reassurance you get from a new T.V. Lets be fair, new cars are unlikely to go wrong, like most new house appliances. If one does go wrong, its the bad batch... :(
My car is still on order, but i pay £297p/m over 4yrs. On deposit of £2500. ONLY because my father use to be in the industry. He found out i was looking for a new A3, so encouraged me to go and speak to someone at my local dealer. He and the business manger offered me 2.6%! Before the business manager got another word in, i said SOLD!
However, most dealers offered me a region of 5%, slightly better than 5.4%. It's like looking for a job, keep trying different GROUPS than dealers. And tell them, this dealer is offering me X...can you match or beat this? One did agree to give me 4.5% provided order was placed that day...
Realistically, although the new cars base monthly cost is £297, i also added GAP and payment protection. Brought it to £360
I always have GAP...so the cost of that is £320p/m
The payment protection is only short term (hopefully) till the current climate cools down and i know my job is going to be secure...ill cancel it then.
Im also planning to shop around on the gap...as i do think £500 for the duration is expensive. So might be canceling that also. I don't have a delivery date yet. ETA: Mid March
As for them getting back to you...dealers are, especially Audi are hopeless when a quote is made! Most buyers fall at the first hurdle. The deal seems innocent and fair. Really, its 'the customer' who will be putting up with it for the next 3-4yrs. Its not like your asking the car for free. So you gotta really push them...mention £1000 and credit card on a deal you want...that really gets them hungry! I was going to accept the 4.5%, but they took too long to get back to me. I got the 2.6+ order. They ironically called that night and said yes. (with fairness they were really helpful, prompt and good to me) i had to gulp, and tell them an order had just been made.
I too am through my finance agreement. They are going to give me £600 equity also. Im more than likely to also put a larger deposit down. I only mention the low deposit sum for personal security (job). DO check out the 1.4 though!

Just to throw my two-pennyworth into the ring. I think that the difference in fuel economy beteween the 2.0TDI and the new 1.8FSI is very small when you take into account the difference in cost of diesel and unleaded.
I too was thinking of changing my 2005 A3 2.0TDI Sport Sportback for either the 1.4 or 1.8 special BLack and went to the main dealer. The salesman said that he would e-mail me a brochure and some firm figures for part exchange and finance, one week later and I am still waiting!!**
I thought sales were down and they were desperate for sales but it seems as if they cannot be bothered.

Just to clarify that things are a little quicker!
0-60 on the 1.8T in 7.6 seconds,
for the 1.4T 9.4 seconds.
Just a few random comments following on from the useful info included in the previous posts:
- I don't like the sport alloys too! - I have switched from a 55 plate 2.0TDI sport to a 58 2.0T S-Line and as soon as I saw the new sport alloys I disliked them
- Xenons are a must for me, so if you need them then they are worth the dosh
- I looked into the 1.8T but could not get a test drive; read around the net and found positive reviews in the A3; however I drove the 2.0T and was hooked! I also fancied / needed a change from diesel to petrol; as much as I loved my 55 plate, I wanted it to be different enough to feel like a bit of a change
- basic sound system is fine for me - went with the USB stick rather than the 6CD autochanger this time around and my 4GB stick works ok with it
- I had black before, yes it gets dirty but I liked it; but thats me and my preferences and I really am not a fan of grey / silver cars tbh.
Good luck with your decision making and keep us up to date with how things are going!

Just in case you didn't know ..... Black Edition pack doesn't force you to have a black car ..... the "Black" refers to the add-on grill, interior inlays, darker wheels and tints ....
You can chose any of the colours .... to quote the press release:
For the full effect, these features are combined with Brilliant Black paint at no extra cost, but the fashionable no-cost option of Ibis White and the extra cost metallic options Phantom Black, Misano Red and Monza Silver are also available.
HTH.
Chris
P.S. Mine is gonna be Phantom Black .... Week 7 build date.

I know what he means...
Its the same when you have placed an order for the car. Once they got that C/Card, if you got any questions they will take a long time to get back! It gets annoying still, you end up speaking to the same receptionist, over and over again! Might ask her on a date next time i ring!
Keep trying chief!
(lets put it into perspective...im still waiting for 7 dealers to call me back. That was in DEC. lol )

Hi guys
Quick update....basically had no repsonse with the sales dept at my local dealer so grabbed the bull by the horns phoned the dealer principal who was shocked (so he said) to hear about the lack of response ive being receiving from the dealer.
In his words "im told by my guys its all running smoothly in sales" so after putting him right in a polite constructive manner i got a call 1 hour later from the sales manager who offered me a 10% discount immediately off a new model....they tried to flog me the 1.9tdi e model but i relented and explained the engine is old to which even the dealer didnt know that point and said its brand new...anyway long story he came back with finance figures that were ridicolous and contradicted previous figures by a substantial amount. When i aksed how one salesman offered me a new one for £220 a month and they now wanted £320 a month he said it was down to the car dropping in value and rounding up etc etc basically more crap.
So im afraid to say ive had yet more problems with the current model...struggles on start pooms of black smoke and yet again water on the back window so after rejecting any offer of an new one its going back on wed for more warranty work. Thank god its not costing me money, thank god its going back in 18 months and after careful consideration it pains me to say after my first audi the expereince has been that bad in terms of dealer and reliability/build quality im so fed up.
Previously owned fords for years, from sierra to mondeos to focuses etc etc and yes while they lose money far quicker than audi ive never had any probs infact the missus has a brand new fiesta and i love it so sorry audi you treat people like crap then all youll get is them turning in their droves away and back to more cost efficient cars that do what they are supposed to.........WORK PROPERLY!
Unless i get offered a deal in the next 18 months for peanuts then im already looking a 2.0tdci zetec mondeo with metallic and xenons for £16000....

It was PCP, over 3 years. At present the car was valued at £11975 by the dealer....then they said last week it will be worth £11000 by march...in 4 weeks?! At that rate the car will not be worth anything in 3 years so good job i got it on PCP and have the option of handing it back...Some might say its been a waste of money as i will walk away with nothing. Trouble is they have such a poor attitude at audi dealers......its not complicated how to run a succesful garage...treat people with respect!
If any audi dealers are reading this please follow some simple rules;
1. Call people BACK!
2. Wash and clean cars when you return them
3. Be honest dont lie
Think i might start my own garage at this rate. The trouble is i find audi all glamour on the outside but as soon as you scratch the surface its a shambles. As i explained to the dealer principal last week im just an avergae joe, im not rich but yet have the means to afford the car so why dont you try treating people with some respect if you went to a shop that treated you like that you wouldnt go back so before long word will get roun...infact in an office of 15 or so people 3 have all had the same problem with audi and not just the same dealer such a shame but its their loss unless they sort their act out

Hi chief. Sorry to hear your bad experience...
Like the other posts suggest, was that the one garage? I really understand the frustration you have. I don't think it is just Audi, but other leading car manufactures are doing the same...ring kia or fiat (don't mean this if it causes offense, but they aren't in the same league as audi) will be running around hard for your custom. Mate is having a fun experience with Honda at the moment.
Have you tried taking the PCP for 3.5-4yrs? That helps bring it down. As for the PCP in general...couldn't agree more. I just don't think it is worth owning a car outright these days! We rely on a car to get us around...you may as well own a reliable one with warranty and hand back at the end. Most people do with T.Vs, sofas, beds...why not a car?
Personally for me, I HATE seeing scratches and new dings on my car...chips to the screen. I know you can remove most of these defects...but some you can't and it's a bummer! Like the fact I know when i give it back its someone else's problem. (also not to forget mechanically)
They are depreciating, you really find it hard to *gulp* . Like you said chief, great im not paying to own this outright. I mean im wondering should i have got this NEW S3 thats going slightly less then the price of my new A3...fully equipped too! ...there must be a market for gas guzzlers if you want one now.
Keep trying cheif...Im sure someone will come to their senses. Also if you live in the south, try some in the north.
Good luck and let us know how u get on! Got any Q's, fire them away! :D

Just a bit of an update re a previous thread i posted some months ago when i was in the process of ordering a new A3 sportback.
For those that havent read the post essentially i was fed up with my current A3 with various niggles which are still present in one form or another. However what made it worse was the respsonse from local dealer audi doncaster. They kept fobbing me off with excuses then when i went to pick the car up after being "repaired" it sat there with the same problem steamed up windows. That was the final straw i went in and had it out with them in the showroom not in my character and probably not productive or looked particulary mature but eventually i was clamed down by a further manager.
Well without boring people too much i left only to be told by the manager to call him once i was happy with the car. I found out that the "manager" was the after sales manager a handy person to know about when you have problems with your local dealer/car. We met on his day off he explained all about my case, the audi brand, the fact that it had been badly handled etc etc which made me feel some what better. He offered me a free service which is due in 2 weeks (its first) and when i raised the issue of it needs a brake fluid change he said no problem that will be covered then also gave me an audi umbrella and leather writing wallet as token gifts for me and the other half.
I got the offer of a free service in writing and is booked in for next week. My point is that should be the customer service all along and if they keep it up i might be tempted to give audi another chance...
Any thoughts/experiences people?

welcome back cheif! I do have experiences of both!
Start with; some annoying niggles, that did get rectified with the help of the used warranty scheme and further to that the extended warranty. It just seemed every 2 months or so the car would develop another niggle. I got fed up in the end and got a new one. (love it!) I can understand the frustration , it puts a downer on things! Since changing im gonna keep my cars newish and with warranty.
My dad had a very similar situation as you. After countless visits and putting 190miles each time in visits to be constantly fobbed off. My dad lost it, just like you did. The manager sorted this out by ensuring the repair was done and not given back till both sides were happy. He also put my dad in touch with the repair centre manager. (on the dealers site). In return they vowed to have it repaired to audi standard and gave him a new A4 s-line full spec to keep him happy why the repairs were being carried out.
What some of us have to do just to get a simple job or request done! Your situation doesn't seem bad at all either...you would have been a happy customer should they have just sorted them out at the time!

Hi car colour? I have an A3 in Akoya Silver which does work well with the dirt. Especialy as mines driven through and parked in a quarry all day and can still look quite clean. Also copes with winter road dirt well. Only problem is its silver which looks like water and birds love to poo over water! A bit of a different angle for you.
