Hi guys i have a 51 plate passat 1.8t, when i changed the battery i cracked the black trim at the bottom of the windscreen the bit that fits round the wiper arms, i have got a new one from the dealers it was only 12 quid! I expected it to be more! Is it just a case of removing the wiper arms and pull off the old one and then fit new one and replace wiper arms? Do the wiper arms come off easily? Any tips on how to fit this are greatly appreciated, cheers

Hi Craig,

The wiper arms usually require a small puller to remove them.

There are two spring clips to remove under the cowl, one in the middle and one at the drivers side.

Starting at one end pull the cowl at right angles to the windscreen, then work your way along until it is released.

Clean out the slot at the bottom of the screen.

Lubricate with a little washing up liquid and offer up the new cowl to position it and then press down to locate the tongue in the slot.

When fitted the top edge should be flush with the screen.

Refit the spring clips and wiper arms.

Badly cracked cowls can lead to water getting into the cabin.

Take care, the screens are easily cracked.

Best,
Frank

Yes they are great instructions! I had real problems removing my wipers. I removed the nuts and used penetrating oil and left it to soak for a few weeks under the plastic caps. I used an open ended spanner that was the right size to slip under the arm and around the spindle to lever them off.

Hello
I used a wiper removal puller for my wipers too.
Take a look at this one, I got mine from ebay and exactly like this. I have a 51 plate passat tdi

I just kept tirning and levering and it eventually came off, great little tool.
