Went out in my B7 tdi today (yes christmas eve) only got to the bottom of the street and heard a loud bang and the car sounded like a tank !!! limped back to the drive looked under the bonnet and as you look at the engine a pipe on the left hand side above where the turbo is located (that from the factory has to spot welds either side) had blown off !!!!!
Not going to drive it and get it booked in but has any one any ideas to what could of caused this and if it will of caused some serious damage :aargh4:

And CHRISTMAS EVE toooo

Sorry but begining to fall out with this beautiful car now and we enjoyed it soooo much to start with.................

Intercooler pipes blowing off is quite a common occurance and shouldn't have damaged the car, just get it refitted. ;)

Happy Chritmas!

Just wondering, is it just common on the 2.0 TDIs for the intercooler silicon pipework to blow-off - or does that apply to other TDI engines (1.9 3.0 etc) too?

Hi Euro slap, Just wondering been out to look at the car today see if we could shove pipe back on before we drive to the garage with it.
The pipe is a metal one and when we started the car up it looked like exhaust fumes coming out of the hole... and was very loud.
Are we still thinking intercooler pipe???
really sounds like the exhaust has blown big time...
Cheers Liz

It must be the down pipe (from the turbo to the exhaust) thats blown off.

There is a flexible joint where the down-pipe joins the rest of the exhaust underneath the car (it allows for engine movement etc). With that in mind (i.e. don't panic) how much of a gap is there between the blown-off pipe and the turbo?

Also, has it just popped-off or is the pipe actually broken?

When you take off the black engine cover, look down to your left its a metal pipe with a flexable bend in it. Its out 10mm.. It looks like it had two spot welds on it from the factory. Pipe dont appear to be broken .
But it dont look like it goes in to the turbo looks like the engine block just above the turbo :l
Im not very technically minded with cars lol like i am with motorbikes.
Hoping to ring round tom and try and get it in but HEY what a time to go Christmas eve !!!!
Thanks

Hmm.. well if you're sure there is exhaust gas coming out of it, then it's probably the turbo bypass pipe thats blown off (the pipe that leads to the waste-gate [blow-off valve / dump valve]).

I presume you have a 2.0 TDI? Are you able to take a photo and post it in this thread - it's help us figure it out easier.

Yeh its the 2.0 TDI, Thats what the garage have said it is....
The garage is only about a mile away so they have told us to take it easy down there and its booked in tom morning at 8am !!!!!
So fingers crossed it aint nothing more serious....
Will let you know tomorrow when we hear from the garage :(
We have told them to have a good look round and if anything else wants doing just to let us know....

Thank you for your help toooo

Hi,

I imagine that your Wastegate (BOV / dump valve) is knackered or needs a serious clean! That's the only reason I can think of for the pipe to blow off!

If thats the case - it's much better that the pipe blew off than the pressure doing something nasty to your turbo veins!

I would recommend the 3.0 TDI - it's SOOOOO smooth compared to the 4 cylinder TDIs. Make sure you get the 230 bhp version as the 204 bhp version will leave you a little disappointed (although you could get a remap like I'm about to do!)

Its been doing some silly juddering for a few weeks but we have family very ill and just havent had the time to take the car in, you could drive around it... little gas or to give it plenty, only mid gas a nd it stuttered a bit but we used to have a Mitz VR4 twin turbo (gas guzzler) before and thought it was because we wasnt used to diesels :l

I would love the 3.0 TDI, because i love the Audi to bits or it was the BMW 330 TDI but i think the Audi looks better !!!!

Your help has been great cant thank you enough, i will deffo let you know what the problem was (is) when its sorted

Cheers Al

Hi Liz,

Ah.. of course, I never thought of that! Did they say why they thought it'd blown off (i.e what had stopped working inside the EGR)?

£400 is a real hit straight after chrimbo :blackeye:

Wishing you a happy new year too!

Yeah let me know how it goes.. but mark my words.. you will be surprised how little faster the 3.0 is than your 2.0! Don't forget:

The 3.0 also has to drive the Quattro system, which not only adds weight to the car but robs power too!
The 3.0 lump is quite a bit heavier than the 2.0 and the tip-auto box is heavy too (this means it dosen't handle quite as well as the 4 cylinder TDI Quattros)
204 bhp is a very conservative output for a 3.0 V6 turbo engine (especially with the weight of Quattro and a tip-auto gearbox to carry around!

I'm not trying to put you off the 3.0 - given the choice again, I'd still go for a 3.0 over a 2.0 and live with slightly less fuel economy in favor of the refinement and extra power!

What I'm trying to say is: don't buy the 204 bhp version - you'll end up hankering after more power!

Go for the 233 bhp version or if you do go for a 204 - book-in for a remap at Motech Performance quick before their remap offer ends (£250 at the moment - usually £499!)

Thank Al,
We shall bear that in mind, also it depends on what they offer us for our car...
Audi Nottingham insulted me the other day only said mine was worth £5000, against a acr at 17'000.... We paid £11'000 for ours back in may, so prob better to hold on to her for a while....

Hello Al, Happy New Year to and your family...
Didnt go to see the 3.0ltr TDI, we sort of ran out of time over the holiday.
Going to hold on to the 2.0ltr TDI for a bit, but just wondering she has been fine since having work done... But still has that stutter in mid range throttle, taking it in to local scecialist when they can fit us in... just wonderig if you had any idea what it could be????
Cheers for now

Hi Liz,

Happy new year to you too!

Was the stutter there before you had the problem with the turbo-bypass pipe blowing off?

A lot of people experience problems with the MAF (Mass Airflow Sensor) which tells the ECU how much air the engine is getting.

A dirty or faulty MAF can result in a number of problems, including reduced performance and stutters.

If you are brave enough to clean your MAF, here are some instructions:

Oh now thats interesting, would be worth a look... Only thing is where is the MAF, if it is easy to do i shall give it a shot.
It doesnt do it at low revs or when you put your foot down just seems to be at mid range, and yes we did have it before the pipe came off. We thought it had cleared when we got it back but its started to do it again.
Must say too the pipe looks like an upgraded one thats on now so i wonder if they changed them, had problems with the one that was on....
Very strange
Many thanks again

Hi,

I know it's not your engine, but the MAF is circled in the picture below.

http://www.toffweb.com/images/MAF.jpg

Based on the picture, you should be able to locate the MAF on your TDI.

You may need a Torx security bit to undo the MAF (which you can buy from Maplins) but Audi seem to just be using cross-head (Phillips) screws these days!
