Greetings, all!
I'm a new VW owner, and trying to make this 1997 Passat work. A capacitor in the instrument cluster blew. Used to be a taxi mechanic, replaced instrument clusters all the time. I bought a used cluster on eBay. Now I am being introduced to the Immobilizer. The VW dealer (only one in town!) says I have to bring it to him, he is the only one who can reprogram the instrument cluster, it may not be reprogrammable, and is going to cost hundreds of dollars to find out. I am a pauper grad student on stipend, and really just need to get to the lab, the grocery store, and occasionally the vet. Would be nice to go home for a visit, not sure if I want to take the Immobilizer though, considering the trouble I'm having now. I'm hoping some of the VW sages in this forum can assist, eternally grateful for any advice!
