I am picking up my new car on the weekend, a 2002 Audi A4 cabby
Only puy a very small deposit down and going to get a HPI check done by the RAC (as it is only 9.99)
Are there any differences between the various providers of the checks?
Anything else I should be looking at checking before handing over my many thousands of £ cash?

if your that nervous about handing over that kind of dosh, then i would get the rac to carry out a full vehicle inspection as well. the cost is peanuts compared to the value of the car, and it secures your investment. an hpi check is good, but if its been crashed and not recorded, then it will come up as clean. a thorough professional inspection will tell if its been messed with or has any problems.

agree with zollaf. It will also give you some piece of mind :)

Indeed. I can tell the Octavia I bought has been rear ended at some stage (nothing involving major speed) because it has new paint and weldmarks underneath the carpet in the boot. I'm not fussed as I got the car for peanuts because it had a turbo problem.
The point is a HPI check wouldn't have told me it had been rear ended. It was never recorded.

indeed hpi is only as good as the info it receives. you could have a car thats insured 3rd party only, involved in a smash, gets sold for spares /repairs, and is straightened out by the new owner, or the good half welded onto another car. this will not show up on hpi, as its never been recorded. this gets sold onto unsuspecting person who thinks they have a bargain. with the high cost of insurance these days, a lot of cars are 3rd party only, so be warned.
