View Full Version : Steering / suspension on 2.6 coupe
93 2.6 coupe

Hey all, glad to find this forum - please help!
I've had a 93 2.6 coupe for about three months and the steering has got a bit looser / wobblier and sometimes the steering wheel lurches to the side when stopping or pulling away hard.
Am worried it might be the steering rack or suspension as 2.6 meant to suffer from this I think.
Anyone had similar??

Wishbone inner bushes, I recommend replacing them with Powerflex. You need to know if your wishbones are welded pressed steel (40-mm) or cast steel (44-mm).

yes definately wishbone bushes. I has the same on my 2.0 80 coupe. These coupes eat bushes like no tomorrow. Good idea with powerflex. Might be a good idea to check all the ball joints too and replace them while you are there.
good luck

Thank you Crusher and upliftin!
I'm not a mechanic so have to rely on garages. Would my best option be to ask a local garage to see which size wishbones I have, then order the powerflex bushes, then go back to get fitted?
Any reccomendations on where to get them?
Would it be sensible to just see if the ball joints are needed when fitting the bushes or go all out and replace them anyway? Trying to balance costs with handling/safety!
Thank you

chances are that your subframe bushes are worn as well. there are 4 of them, pressed into the subframe. if one of these is worn, it can allow the frame to flex, usually when you brake. they are only a few quid each from the likes of gsf. its not much more time to drop the subframe and change the bushes, and when getting the wishbone bushes done is the ideal time, as the wishbones are attatched to the subframe. to check your wishbones just look at them. the pressed steel ones are two halves, a top and a bottom, spot welded together, with a flange around where they are joined together. the forged ones are one piece. I think the easiest way to get the polybushes is either ebay, if theres any on at the moment, or direct from powerflex themselves. if you look on their website, they have a list of suppliers as well. if you take the car to a garage then you should pay around 2 hours to change the wishbone bushes, and another 2 for the subframe bushes, as these need to be pressed / cut out and pressed back in. the polybushes just push into the wishbones, after removing the old bushes.

I am a major dealer of Powerflex bushes, although the web site is in a bit of a mess at the moment and the Powerflex section isn't working.
