Hi,

I've recently bought a 1998 Audi A4 TDi. However the rear speakers don't work. The car has an aftermarket Kenwood headunit and after reading some posts on here I see that one of the rear speakers has a build in amp.

What I need to know is if I can just fit some aftermarket 6.5" speakers onto the rear shelf using the required adaptor plates ???

Is it a straight swap or do I need to do any other modifications to get the replacement speakers to work ? Also, what do I do with the wires for the amp ? Can I just tape them up ???

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Taj.

The original speakers will have a plug on them so you won't need to tape anything up. You can put normal speakers in and run speaker cable from the head unit with no probs. ;)

Thanks for the quick reply, but can I use the original speaker cable that's already in the car ? I don't want to mess around with new cables ???

Thanks.

The original cables from the amp to the speakers don't run to the headunit so you'll have to I'm afraid. It's quite simple to do.

Personally I'd run both speakers up the same sill which will half the effort. ;)

Can't I use the original cable then ? I thought as that cable is already there it would be easier just to use that instead.

Is the original cable just standard speaker cable ? It's not different due to the built in amp on one of the speakers ???

Basically you'll have signal cables from the head unit to the amp and then a short run of speaker cable from the amp to the speaker.

ok, so if I cut the cable before it gets to the amp, then I can just connect that cable direct to the new speakers, would that work ok ???

You'll save yourself a load of ball ache if you just run a length of cable. In the trade you wouldn't even attempt to use the original cabling.

ok, thanks for your help, I guess I'll have to get the parcel shelf off and take a look at exactly how it's all wired up before I decide what's the best way.

Cheers.

You only have low level signal cable running fom the HU to the rear amp, you can't use this as speaker cable as it will fry your head unit. It only has a single core for left & right with an earthed screen protecting it. If you cionnect the earthed screen to the HU speaker outputs it will fry the internal amp, you have to run new cable.

I was trying to explain this to him in simple terms but he didn't seem to want to listen. :o
