Hi there,
I have a 2007 A4 avant tdi sline B7. Purchased only 4 weeks ago with a full Audi check, done 12,000 miles.
I have just reasd a write up from some unhappy clients saying they have to fill it with oil every month? Is that so?
Please advise as I would neever normally check expect only say every 6 months?
Thanks. M

I have an 07 s-line 170 tdi (2 litre) bought with 14k on the clock. After about 15k the oil warning light came on so I topped it up.

It's on long life servicing and was serviced at 18.5k. It now has 20.5 and I've not topped it up, although obviously the oil was replaced at service time.

Make sure you use the right grade oil according to your service schedule and most people say oil useage settles down around 20k. I would say a litre every 5k seems about right for the first 25K

Well, I'd say yes however ther are others that adocate regular oil level checks.

If you do wait till the warning light comes on top up ASAP, otherwise check levels every few thousand miles and ensure the dipstick is somewhere between half and max level.

I'm one of those people who says to check regularly.

It only takes 5 minutes and can save you thousands if your engine does run dry. Remember all that makes the light come on is a switch and switches can break!!

Some engines use more oil than others, and the only way to find this out is to check every week or couple of weeks.

for the love of god and all that is holy please do not wait for the light to come on!! check it once a week min, if the engines underload ie towing or your one of these folk who like to drive their cars had check it more often, the 16v engines do use oil, mines done 97k now, doesnt seem to use much oil, but then i towed a car trailer twice in 2 weeks - being easy on the engine and only about 150 miles in total) and it still went through a litre of oil nearly..

Them are engines virtually still not run in, so will still be bit stiff. It's common for them to use oil at very low mileage, especially when lead boots are worn.

I believe the oil consumption will improve with age.

I once got told by a engineer I used to work with that he got told by a VW tech enginer that the old 8v PDs etc whent fully run in till 200k if serviced on the nose, with VW oil and filters and driven properly (ie not thrashed!!!) my old PD 115, had 197K on it and didnt use any oil between services! 10K miles and no oil top ups! now beat that!

Thats good news then, as mine has just run in. However uses about 0.50lt per 6000 miles.

Hi Magician
My diesel 2.0 140ps A4 has now done 2,500 miles from new. I check the oil level regularly and so far it is still at the top of the dip stick. (It was just above the maximum mark on the day of collection from new.)
No way would I wait for a dash board light to tell me that the engine needs oil.
I have two friends that have Audi cars with this engine and both tell me that their cars consume a lot of engine oil. However they do tend to drive with a heavy right foot accelerating hard from cold and from when their cars were brand new.
My car will be treated very carefully for the first few thousand miles as rightly or wrongly I still believe that running in an engine the old fashioned way can pay big long term dividends in terms of economy and performance. (I realise many members may tell me I am talking nonsense on this point!)
Just one other thing in respect of the 2 cars of my friends; their engines are topped up with Castrol.
Mine was supplied with Mobil (and the top up can provided is Mobil) so that’s what I will stick with.
