Hi guys,

Got a 2001 PDTDI 130 Sport Passat. Dropped my girlfirend off at work last night and thought would take the car for a long blast as alot of my journeys are around only 10 - 25 mins long with a bit of stop start traffic, don't really drive it too hard normally. Drove for about an hour last night after warming the engine up and gave it a good clearing out, taking the car to the red line through the gears alot. This morning I dove the car back to my house about a 10 minute drive and left the car standing for about an hour or 2. Jumped back in it started the car up and it ran rough for about 10 - 15 secs and there was a plume of white / greyish / slight bluish tinge smoke if that makes sense. Car has never done this since i've had it. Once driving though the smoke completely disappeared, there was no visible smoke on idle either. Sorry for long post, any ideas?

Any help appreciated.

Stu.

Maybe you just blew some oil dregs out of the intercooler and associated pipes?
Ideally it shouldn't be there anyway, but always is, so the extra airflow of your higher rpms must have blown some of it into the intake.

i am not too sure but i think it happens on diesels because the engine is too cold?

Been out on a couple of journeys since, problem hasn't repeated itself after car has been left standing for same period of time it was this morning. Had car 6 months and have it serviced every 6000 miles, it's just had an oil and filter change done about 200 miles ago using quantum PD 5/40 oil. When at the garage on Friday having cv joints, gearbox oil and oil filter changed the mechanic pointed out that a top turbo hose had come loose, he re-attached it and said it could work its way loose again, dunno if that might cause the smoke?

Thanks for any help guys

the intercooler pipe being off would indeed cause smoke, but usually black,
the blue-ish stuff you have seen will have been,as said above, the oil from the inlet/breather system, although if you constantly take it to the red line you will have lots of smoke when the engine blows.
does the car pull all the way up to the red line?
i have never had my 130 bora anywhere near that, the accelleration seems to dip before that and i try and change up while still accellerating, keeping the revs between 1800-3200 ish, think it's red lined around 4600 or so?
does it pull up to the red line?

Hi mate, I don't make a habit of taking it to the red line at about 4600, usually change about 2000 rpm when driving, or if driving quickly max i take it to is 4000 rpm, just thought it would be a good idea to blow any built up crap out of the car as i do quite a bit of stop start driving, economy seems to hover around 40mpg which seems a bit low so thought a good drive might clear it up. Car pulls very strong to the red line, suprising considering it makes peak power at 4000 rpm and peak torque at 1900. Taking it to 4600 rpm through 1st and 2nd gear and into 3rd still gave a shove in the back when i accelerated. :beerchug:

mine used to be quite flat on acceleration above 3500 rpm.. I have since had the ecu re-mapped and now she pulls very nicely all the way up! Still get 5o mpg on average every day too :D
