Golf Mk4 1998tdi rear axle bushes removal

Has anyone done one of these as a diy job,is it worthwhile I understand that it can be a long job and that a special tool is required to install the new bushes. I can't find any guides/manuals that suggest how to remove the old bushes.
All the Haynes manual suggests that VW mechanics use a slide hammer to remove the bushes of burn the rubber out and then saw the outer casing and remove as a shell. Anyone got any other suggestions (Polite)

Get some one else to do it... There is a tool used to pop them out but its not a nice job to do unless u have a ramp..

depends if you are hands on or not if not i hear polish labour is cheap.
special tools consists of hack saw to remove and socket to refit so forget the slide hammer i did have some pics of me doing this somewhere.

if you put them in with a slide haammer you must have arms bigger than arny shwarts !! there is a proper tool for getting them back in g.s.f or .e.c.p do them

you can put the new ones in by making a tool out of m12 studding and some 1/4 inch plate, and some nuts. put as much pressure on as possible by tightening the nuts, then hit with large hammer and the bush will move a bit. repeat this process until its all the way in. this is a nasty job as the whole back axle needs removing to do it.

As above try to find someone else cheap to do it,not a nice job and a real pain in the bass if you havnt got a ramp + good selection of tools

If you remove the brake lines make sure that your break fluid doesn't leak all over.
i experienced this the hard way and I was without brakes .
have a good plug ready or if you replace the break lines then bend them in the way it doesn't leak.
Otherwise you have to bleed the master cylinder and if you are lucky then it works if not then you have to bleed the whole system ABS and clutch
