Mine's a Avant TDI SE and the standard system is rubbish, my questions being...

anyone with a non-Bose system upgraded theres?

What size are the standard speakers so i know what size components to replace with and how many are there?

Should i need to buy speaker adater plates for the rear or anything?

When i had an E36 i had to buy adapter plates because the standard speakers were like 4inch or something silly.

:1zhelp:

Though the speakers may not be state-of-the-art, esepcially given the age of these cars, replacing the head unit can make a big difference, especially if you've not got a Bose unit already.

PS "Becker" make some good units that give look very close to OEM. If your prepare to spend a few quid, some of them they'll include bluetooth, satnav, MP3 playback... in a single DIN unit.
One minor draw back is they won't sow track/station info on the DIS on the dashboard.

you think the speakers have more to give with a better head unit? maybe worth looking into but i just presumed the speakers were to blame aswell, they have no mid or bass going on at all compared with my vw passats standard speakers (car around the same year).

i definetely dont have bose hehe

The B5 takes 13.5cm front component speakers.

I got some Infinity Reference for mine:

You need the Autoleads speaker adapter rings (and will need to get the dremel out to grind the edges off the rings so they don't touch the speakers).

I run the standard head unit (with Mini-DIN to RCA Line Out Adapter) to a Phoenix Gold 4 Channel Amp. 2 Channels for the front components and the other 2 Channels bridged to mono for a 12" JL Sub (in an EFMAX box).

Sounds pretty good and I've still got loads of space in the boot (ahh the joys of not having a supermini any more!) :D

From what I've read, a good aftermarket head unit can improve things, but I'm no expert and have not experiemented...
