View Full Version : Please Help No CD text - listening blind!

When listening to CDs I get no info on either the CD name or the tracks - just 'Audio CD' and 'Track (number)'. Problem occurs with both original audio CDs (have tried several) and copied ones. Very frustrating as I cannot see what is in the CD changer or in what position. The CDs actually play with no problem, and all other functions of the MMI seem to work perfectly. Car has sat nav, B&O and MMI but no AMI or phone prep. Build was sometime in August/September 08.

Have used Media> Setup to set 'Display CD text' to 'on' but still no CD-specific text appears - just Audio CD and Track (number). Have also tried resetting the MMI (page 70 of MMI Manual) which also turns the system off then on again (in true computer-fixing fashion!) - again didn't help. Also found a menu in MMI for resetting CD to factory default - once again didn't help. Menu under 'CD Changer' on page 41 of MMI Manual shows '- CD name' as an option, but this does not appear as an option when I select 'CD Changer' with the MMI controls. So I'm stuck!

One phone call to dealer so far but their response didn't sound promising -they suggested I try a copied CD which might work (which I now have, and it didn't!). And surely the system should work with original CDs anyway?

Anyone else had this problem? Is it software? Or hardware? Or me being thick? Any ideas for fixing it please?

Otherwise the car (Avant 2.0 TFSI) is brilliant. My only gripe is that the paint finish (Brilliant Black) is rather orange-peely in a couple of places - on my previous two Audis (started my affair with Audi back in 1987!) the finish has been perfect. Thought of complaining but decided that remedial work would probably be worse than the factory finish!

Hope someone can help (with the lack of text, not the paint!).

Make a MP3 CD and give the tracks names instead of numbers.

CD-Text is not always included with new CD's. In fact most labels don't bother, as it was originally introduced by Sony. So as far as I know only Sony/BMG and it's subsidiaries use it.

If you do want to include it on a copied CD, you have to make sure that your CD burning software has the include CD-Text option on - it usually isn't by default. You'll also need an internet connection to make sure that the software can query one of the on-line databases for the CD-Text information.

Hope this helps.

Certainly not a problem with your setup. I only have a few CDs with the track text and these are older ones. Only a few labels actually bother to use this feature.

One way to get the information is to put the CD into a PC/Mac with Itunes, let ITunes go off and get the date for the album and then make a copy ensuring you include the CD text settings to take the mp3s across with the id tags. Let me know if you want help doing this. Bit of a waste of CDs but it does mean you can put multiple albums onto one CD complete with text and keep the originals safe in your house.......or use the SD card slot after recording the CDs to the SD

Thanks a million everyone for helping so quickly - and solving my problem!

Based on your excellent advice I have:

1. Checked out an original Sony CD which, as you rightly say, is encoded with album name and track details, all of which show up on the MMI screen.

2. Copied favourite CDs, with name/track data downloaded from the Web and with text settings enabled, which again results in name/track details being displayed on the MMI. As you say it seems a waste of CDs, but at least it works!

Seems amazing to me that manufacturers don't encode CDs with title/artiste/track data as a matter of course. Especially given how many people must be using CD changers in cars and experiencing the same frustration as I have. Surely can't be that difficult, and there's loads of space left on most CDs. Mystery!

Anyway, thanks again for all your help - really appreciated! My faith in Audi technik is restored!

remember like the guys above said if you put them on the recordable discs as mp3 tracks rather than burning a "music cd" in itunes or media player you can fit 10 or more albums on a single cd this way you get a virtual 60 disc changer - very useful especially if you arrange each disc into music types (got one in my car that has a selection of the original Bond books as audio books to entertain me on long journeys)

Thanks for the tip re mp3s - I'll try it. A 60-disc changer sounds the business - probably never have to eject or load a disc again!
