mpg

can anyone tell me why my MPG average has gone down from 46mpg when i bought it to now 39mpg, i drive the car steady not revving the engine and check the tyre pressure once a week... surely it should be doing more than 39 mpg... its a vw golf gti (150) 2003

any advise please.
