Have noticed my oil level had dropped to under a half last week. The problem i have i which oil to use? Having consulted the manual it say's to go for VW 506 01 which i can get from fuchas, on line from oilman.
But when i phoned audi to check with them they told me to use Mobil 5W30 fully synthetic, which is not longlife service.
Am i best to stick to longlife oil which i assume it has in it, or go with mobil 5w30 which would cut the oil life down?

did you check what oil was in the boot ? they usually give you a litre of oil in a little leatherette holder thingy velcro'd to the side of the boot

I just checked boot, nothing in there.
Do they put in longlife service oil when thet car is new?

Ignore what the dealer tells you they don't seem to be well to informed with regards to oil .
Stick to what the manual says if it states 506.01 then use a good quality oil with that spec.

castrol edge 5w30 or mobil 1 5w30 esp is the correct spec. i am sure there are others but these two you can get easily from ebay, costco or, if desperate, *********

Read your hand book. If the spec calls for 50501 or 50601......use that and that only. Use the VW and Audi recommended oil for that engine.

Also when taking your car for an oil change or service, check the oil the dealer used, I've had a dealer put the wrong spec oil in my car before.

I have been following the manual to find the correct oil, but if you look at the book it gives you the info. on either regular service oil oil or long service oil.
But what it doesn't tell you is what oil is originaly put in the car, and after calling audi themselves i am still in the dark.
I check my service interval left on my car and this reads 17000 miles, so is this long service ??

yes it is longlife.in the front of your service book it should be `ticked` where the different service intervals are,and that should be `longlife` in your case.always go for the VW oil sheet spec.No. such as 507.00 etc depending on your intervals.some say longlife on the bottles, some not.

I Noticed halfords sell castrol edge 5w-30. And when you look up the spec it says it replace's an older longservice type of oil for vw engines. Will get some of that.

Castrol Edge 5w-30 is 507.00 which is exactly what you want to use.
