My golf starter motor turns but does not fire, I have no lights on the dashboard, I have had this poblem once before and it seems like it could be a dry joint on the fueboard. Does anybody know how easy/difficult it is to replace an fuseboard and where I can get one from?

They never go wrong, ever, unless they get wet. Your problem is more than likely the ignition switch and they are always failing. Swapping a Golf 3 VR6 fuse board (called a relay plate or central electrics by VW) is not a job for the faint hearted, especially if there is an alarm fitted, which may also be your problem. The part number is 357 937 039 and was used in thee Golf 2 and Golf 3 from 1990 to 1998, the Cabrio and Caddy up until 2003 and others such as the Sharan up to 2000 and the Transporter until 2004.

Check all of your body grounds off of the battery!

I have just had that on a 97 VR6, nightmarish electrical problems and all down to the two earth points under the battery tray being heavily corroded. The main battery to body earth cable was corroded beyond re-use or repair, I had to have a new one made.
