My MK3 Golf 1.8 has an autobox fitted that has developed a real bad leak. Probably around a quarter to half a litre of fluid per run. I know that the sump pan gasket is not at fault so suspect that either the torque converter or a seal has gone. Is there any way this can be checked without having to remove the box itself, or is there somewhere else I should be looking for a possible leak?

(a quarter to half a litre of fluid per run) Hi With that amount of oil leaking you should surely be able to see were it is coming from.

You would think so but there is so much of the stuff covering the whole underside of the car, it appears to be dripping from everything

I would give it a good cleaning, put the car on stands and let it run in gear. You should be able to see then were it is coming from.I dont think that amount of oil leaking, would come from a leaking seal.I fancy there is a pipe leaking.

Are there any external pipes on the gearbox, I have to say there is little to no information I can find on it at all. I have had lots of automatic cars over the years and never known a torque convertor to leak but I guess anything is possible.

The transmission has a cooler that I think runs from the radiator or the oil filter housing, I can't remember which I'm afraid.

Thanks for the response. The oil cooler on this model bolts directly to the top of the autobox, this is new and is leak free so I have manged to rule that out. What I dont know is if there are any know weaknesses with this gearbox that people know about, or maybe an indepth diagram or similar available anywhere that I can refer to. I will jack it up as suggested earlier and see what I can find
