Hi,
What mileage are the late 90's i.e. 97-99 era TDi engines good for? both 90bhp and the 110bhp. What's considered as high mileage for the cars engine/ running gear etc.
What is the difference between the 90bhp and the 110bhp engines also please?
Thanks Sam

about 20bhp :p
Sorry couldn't resist.
Ours 110bhp AHF in the A3 has done 105k miles and is still going strong.
The 110bhp engine is based on the 80 tdi engine and they can go for 250k miles, as can be seen on EBay quite a lot.
My 110 AFN engine has 150,000 and is going well....:D

our A6 1.9TDI with the AFN 110 HP engine has almost 180,000 on the clock and still going strong with regular servicing. just make sure all the belts are checked.

general rule of thumb (i gotta stop saying that) .... for any car....look after it well, it will pay you back tenfold. a well serviced VAG engine will go on in excess of 200k, the diesel engines are such strong engines, its just a matter of keeping them properly serviced and as has already been said, keep the belts tight and an eye on the relevant tensioners, always change them in accordance with guidelines.:beerchug:

The vw TDI engines are designed to work for about 30000 hours, before needing major overhaul. Given an average of over 40 Miles an hour, it equates to over 1200000 Miles. By that time, the rest of the car will be a pile of junk ...There are cars out there that passed the milion miles treshold, one of them beeing a petrol Saab and a few 1970/80 mercedes diesels .

in what context? sorry to state the obvious but the 110 has 20more bhp than the 90, yes. im pretty sure too depending on the age, the 110 would be a PD engine rather than the 90 VE :beerchug:

Obviously there's a 20bhp defference lol
I mean what's causing the 20bhp drop? i.e different Turbo, inlet manifold, injectors, fuel pressure?
I want the one that's going to give the best MPG, most miles and least hassle. I know it's pot luck with cars but would like to choose the safer option.

LOL im sorry i just couldnt resist....
as for the bhp diff... im sorry... icouldnt tell you, im sure its a different turbo and dependant on the age, itd be a differnt engine, the older 110s were ve. all 90's are VE. the newer 110's are PD i think, so dependant on the age, i personally would go for the PD engines, easier to map and better performance, if its economy youre after, you cant beat the 90, although you may feel its slightly under powered.

Sound, no doubt a 90bhp diesel will feel very slow but when it's costing little to run it's something that could probally be lived with.
Thanks

well, IMO, i dont think you would find a vast difference in the MPG between the 90/110/115 engines, it tends to be the 130/150 that youll notice the siginificant decline in MPG, so you could bear that in mind when viewing....
always here to help :beerchug:

Proof the cambelt has been done, condition of anccalary belts, oil leaks, dry carpets....could be the normal drain hole blocked problem.... good bargaining point;) see if it revs past 3000 rpm and what comes out of the exhaust, black smoke ok... other colours be carefull. plus usual stuff, water, oil etc.
be sensible there are plenty about don't pay over the odds.....use head not heart.....:D

Good good, already discussed the above with the current owner.
How often should the cam belt and tensioners be replaced?

Can anyone list the spec of the S model & SE model please? Do either have an on board computer?

My father in-law has an SE 2001 with leather interior, but no Computer. Its an option.
I know its an SE as leather is not an option on an S.
Hope that helps
Rob:D
PS cambelt 60K or 4 years whichever comes first. But i think the PD engines are shorter intervals.....VW has recently revised these, maybe worth giving the dealer service dept a ring.

90hp is fine ! Excellent engines. the 110 and 90 are basically identical..the 110 has slightly larger injection nozzles and slightly different ecu setup to compensate :o..the only PD engines are 100,115,130,150 hp variants..the older engines are bullet proof..proven over and over ..although the new ones are a little more responsive and quieter they wont outdo the older engines on economy or longevity!
good luck ! :beerchug:
my 110 passat has nigh on 150k showing & the engine has never missed a beat, only cost engine wise has been routine servicing
