have fun,the best way is to remove the rear axle complete and do it all on a bench with puller tool and oxy bottles and you need to press the new bushes in correctly.I have the proper puller but 9/10 the metal outers stay inside the axle and you have to hacksaw them or be good with the gas bottles.I will add i dont do them as private jobs anymore

I have a special German tool that bores off the outer ring of the metal bodied version and then a frame press pushes the inner out and even at 10 tons pressure we often have to beat the tool along with a 3lb copper lump hammer and the banging noises the tool makes as it jumps are so loud we have to wear ear defenders. Installing the new plastic bodied bushes is a sketch without the press tool.

Hi Folks
I had my rear axle bushes replaced on Friday.
Was getting the wobble at the back of the car (2001 MK4 1,6 S 16V 50,000mls) when cornering also accompanied with a thud when going over potholes and ramps on the road.
I think it was around £35 for the two bushes and about £65 labour.
Left her in at 10am and she was ready for 2.30pm
At first I thought it was the rear suspension bushes( If there is such a thing!)
Mark.
