Hi Folks,

When I'm not spending money copious amounts of money on my LR Defender TD5, sending me further into the overdraft, my mind turns to my Audi Avant.
When it comes to engine modifications etc, Im in my comfort zone with whats needed on the TD5. Audi.....not so sure and it's a bit daunting as it cost so much

Have a few things I would like more information regarding the following modifications.

ECU REMAPS ----------------------------

With the Defender its advisable to fit silicon hoses for the increased boost pressure, performance air filter and a HUUUUUUUUUGE sports intercooler to reduce the EGT temps generated by increase in fuel burnt.

What about the Audi 2.0 tdi. Does the standard intercooler provide enough cooling capacity?

What does the 170ps model have that the 140ps doesnt?

Anyone had any problems with the Performance filters messing up the Air flow meter sensor?

In the Land rover world there are tuners you know tune too high, those who charge well over the odds, have the best know how and facilities and safest remaps. I hear a alot about chip and spin on here.... any good? Have a quote at the moment from a local tuner who did my TD5 remap whose pretty decent.

CRUISE CONTROL ----------------------------

Anyone had this retro fitted? Would be a nice addition on long journeys. Shame Audi skimps on the S line but gives all the fancy bits to the SE huh? Who does the kits and roughly how much.

TRIP COMPUTER ------------------------------

This is probably a no no but is there a way for it to tell me the MPG instead of miles on a full tank?

Thanks for your time guys. :beerchug:

Found this on : http://www.p-torque.co.uk/

"Jason Gross - 2005 Audi A4 2.0 TDI (140bhp)
Hi Will, just to say that I am very impressed with the remap you performed last week on my 2005 A4 2.0TDi. I have now driven over 500 miles without some much as a cough from the engine. The increase in performance is definitely noticeable, mid range its fantastic, it has a real punch to it. I would recommend you talk to Will if like me, you were a bit nervous about mucking around with your brand new >20K car but really wanted to increase its performance safely. Thank you once again - Jason "

Hi mate

Just had cruise control retrofitted to my avant about a month ago by these guys: www.vwcruise.com (http://www.vwcruise.com)

Very professional workmanship and work is guaranteed for 36 months, from these VAG specialists.

Or if you fancy having a go fittting yourself you can get the bits from www.vagparts.com (http://www.vagparts.com)

I retrofitted Cruise Control and the DIS (MPG computer) myself. The cost was approximately £100 for the parts and £200 for VAG-COM. The investment in VAG-COM has since enabled me to:

Retrofit Bluetooth,
Retrofit Satnav,
Enable the alarm beep on locking,
Enable delayed wipe when using the wash/wipe for the front windscreen,
Correct an inaccuracy in the MPG readout

So all in all I think VAG-COM was worth it. If all you are going to do is fit Cruise, the dealer will do that for about £300.

EDIT: There are guides for all of these retrofits on various Audi forums such as this one, tyresmoke and navplus.us

Wow! Sounds amazing! I was looking at some cheap VAGCOM style kits on ebay for circa £30. USB connector and cd. Not as fancy as Vagcom but....

Anyway, how faffy was it to fit the advanced mpg calculator. I think the Distance to go is a bit cheap on audi's part. Even my partners 1.4 tdci fiesta has trip computer with all the bag of mashings! :zx11::aargh4::biglaugh:

You need a HEX+CAN VagCom lead. The cheapy ones from ebay are generally just CAN leads. The A4 uses K-Line as well as CAN, so there are a few modules you wouldn't be able to access with a CAN only lead. Here (http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/hex-usb+can.html) is a link to the VagCom lead you would require. Alternatively there are a lot of people with VagCom who will gladly help you for the price of a few beers. Myself included, but Marmitehampton is near Darlington...

Its a case of swapping the wiper stalk for one with the rocker switch on the end then recoding. It will then give you two seperate trip computers, the first one holds all the data for about 2 hours after you switch off the engine before automatically resetting, the second holds the data until you reset it or after 99 hours of driving. There is also a menu for setting the time / date, speed warnings, whether the radio station is displayed, temperature units, distance units and other stuff.

The stalk is about £40 - £50 from the dealer. If you want Cruise Control as well, its probably a good idea to do it all at the same time as you have to take the steering wheel off and you will have to reset the steering angle sensor. All this might sound scary but it is straightforward and is documented well here (http://www.tyresmoke.net/forum/audi-a4-s4-cabrio/68576-retro-fitting-dis-cruise-a4-b6.html) which although it is for a B6 is exactly the same procedure for a B7.

You do need to ensure you have the correct steering wheel module for cruise but the one fitted to my 2007 A4 S-Line was ok. If you do need to change the steering wheel module for cruise then VagParts do a complete kit with the steering wheel module, cruise control stalk and lower cowling for around £100.

I hope this helps,
